While Disney 's gender roles may be crazy to western societies, there are many civilisations around the world that would consider these gender roles to be normal. Let 's take India for example, particularly rural India, as many people in these areas haven 't been affected by modernisation and westernisation and are still following traditional Hinduism culture and values. For example, some of the women 's roles in hinduism that are still being strictly followed are “To keep the home clean and well-decorated [and] to dress and decorate herself to please her husband.” These two roles are very similar to those of Cinderella and Snow White, as they are expected to clean and accept it as a normality, and they are also expected to be beautiful in …show more content…

Similarly, in Hinduism the idea of men being superior and better than females is evident in many aspects. For example, if a woman gives birth to a baby boy, her social status increases, but if she births a girl, it deceases. As well as this, many female baby 's will be aborted or abandoned once they are born. This idea of men being superior and more important is yet again evident in my chosen Disney films, as the males in these movies are always portrayed as stronger and braver, while the females are portrayed as weak and in need of saving. Obviously the male role is the more desirable one, as who would want to be considered a weak and pitiful damsel in distress? However, in the urban areas of India, gender roles have seen a great change as technology and westernisation have taken effect, however as of 2013 only 29% of women over the age of 15 are working. This is most likely due to the fact that many women are still acting as home makers in India. This just goes to show the way gender roles and stereotypes have changed in Western societies, as opposed to the way they have continued to exist in areas such as India, where traditional cultures and values surrounding gender roles are still very strong and
