Sometimes people have trouble changing their minds about certain things but what if they had friends to make them think in a positive way and change how they act. Coming from a negative mindset to being positive may not be easy but with certain help and having certain friends you can change. Survival in Auschwitz written in 1947 by Primo Levi is based on a true story, Levi was one of many to survive the crucial conditions of the concentration camps in Germany. During the Holocaust many jews and non believers of Adolf Hitler were set up to be killed. Throughout the book, Levi had many different mindsets and struggles. He started as a confused and uncertain character but that didn't change because he became worst and finally became a better person. …show more content…

Many times Levi had skipped his showers because the felt like it was pointless but it's important to shower because it makes you feel human. Due to terrible conditions at the camp, Levi thinks his death is coming soon and decides to let go of himself. “I must confess it: after only one week of prison, the instinct for cleanliness disappeared in me… Why should I wash? Would I be better off than I am? Would I please someone more? Would I live a day, an hour longer? I would probably live a shorter time, because to wash is an effort, a waste of energy and warmth… The more I think about it, the more washing one’s face in our condition seems a stupid feat, even frivolous: a mechanical habit, or worse, a dismal repetition of an extinct rite. We will all die, we are all about to die...”(Levi 3) With the hard labor, harsh weather, and very little food a person could see their life ending pretty soon and that's exactly what happened with Levi. Good thing Lorenzo, Italian Civilian Worker, was a good samaritan and had a good mindset. Due to Lorenzo being a good friend and having one of the best jobs at the camp is not usually a thing you would see often at the camp. Most high power workers are mean and take advantage of the weeklings. Having someone, a friend, who’s a good example and a good influence can go a long way. “I believe that it was really due to Lorenzo that I am alive today; and not so much for his material aid, as for his having constantly reminded me by his presence, by his natural and plain manner of being good, that there still existed a just world outside our own, something and someone still pure and whole, not corrupt, not savage, extraneous to hatred and terror; something difficult to define, a remote possibility of good, but for which it was worth surviving.” (Levi 12) Because Lorenzo was such a nice person to Levi, the showed that there was still
