Criminal Justice Internship Paper – Sanford Police Department For my first article that I had to review that deal with interns and/or service learning was the Evaluation of a Criminal Justice Internship Program: Why Do Students Take It and Does It Improve Career Preparedness? I choose this particular article because I wanted to see if I had any of the same reason for choosing an internship that this case study did. The purpose of the article was to see if there was a positive or negative impact to whether an internship program will better prepare you for your career of choice. The article talks about four types of experiential learning opportunities (ELOs) for undergraduates to participate in. The four types of experiential learning include internships, field trips, service-learning, and research projects. Internships expands a student understanding of the criminal justice system, often causing a change in students’ attitudes whereby they become less compassionate toward offenders and more understanding of practitioners (George, Lim, Lucas, & Meadows, 2015). But internships can also pose a threat for the student involved on one, for number of reason. If a student is paying for themselves through college, an internship that requires them to be there for a certain amount of hours may impact their work schedule and their income. On top of that they have to manage doing well in all of their other classes and assignments. Service- learning can be defined as s “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities” (George, Lim, Lucas, & Meadows, 2015).
