Have you ever just sat back and wondered how others view your parents? Parents are often stereotyped by how they choose to parent their children. Parents take on much responsibility when they bring a little life into the world, and they have to choose how to parent their children early. The type of discipline parents use has a dramatic effect on a child’s development. Most parents are categorized into one of four categories, but some parents sometimes do not fit into just one category. They are considered strict, average, lenient or the uninvolved parent. These various approaches to parenting can influence a child’s mood and temperament long into their adulthood. These type of parents are considered the “average” parent. These parents often explain the reasoning behind their rules and are willing to consider their child’s feelings when setting boundaries. For example, they may set their child a curfew, but on special occasions let them stay out a little later. Parents with this nature tend to use consequences instead of punishments. They also practice positive praise to back up good behaviors and are more willing to use a reward system than strict parents. Children raised in this type of environment often tend to be happy and successful. They are good at making decisions and grow up to be responsible adults. These type of parents often only step in when there is a serious problem rather then be involved in every problem their child has. Few consequences for misbehaving are in place because these parents have the attitude that “kids will be kids.” Lenient parents take on more of the friend role rather than the parent role. Children in this situation often so called run over their parents and make all their decisions on their own. You see lenient parents more in a situation of a divorce where the parents are trying to make their child like one more than the other. Because lenient parents do not expect much out of their children, many children struggle academically. The children have no one to push them or expect anything out of them, so they do not expect anything out of themselves.
