Spanking has become a wildly use type of punishment that parents use with children. Spanking can have many negative effects on a child. It could lead to criminal behavior or the child becoming violent in the future. Children learn better from what they hear or what they are told by their parents or guardians. With spanking, comes trust issues between children and parents. There are many other forms of punishment that is more effective than spanking your child. With spanking, comes trust issues between children and parents. The results of spanking could be devastating or neural.

Parents often discipline children by taking away privileges such as driving or possessing a cell phone. “This type of discipline is most effective if it is not arbitrary, meaning if the child was previously aware of a consequence of a bad behavior” (Kennedy, 2015). This way, the child will then “remember that last time they had acted out, they will in return loose something. Another form of punishment that has been found more effective, more so with younger children is a time out. “During the time-out, the child must sit quietly in a predetermined location for a number of minutes, usually a minute for each year of age” (Kennedy, 2015). Instead it is best to make sure the child knows what it is they did wrong. The outcome of punishment is to get the child to not only understand that they have done something wrong, but to get them to understand what caused them to act out.
