Social media is define as a subset of web 2.0 technologies that include all online social networks, Weblogs, Wikis, Twitter, and Facebook, text messaging, among others, which provide online collaboration, information sharing, and collective intelligence for the people (Van Niekerk & Maharaj, 2013). It has revolutionized the way people communicate and socialized on the web. This essay will be focusing on the social media impact on society through election campaign, military operations, civil disturbances, transparency, personal privacy, and organization reputation.
Social media has played a big role in almost all elections around the globe. Today’s politician have little choice but to join the social media bandwagon in order to communicate and rally continuously with their supporters. The speed in which information can spread through social media is quite difficult to contain especially if it is unintentional or accidentally released. On the upside, social media can be used to enhance understanding of the markets, customers, competitors, public relations, and employees. On the other hand, it can undermine productivity internally through the amount of time employees spend on social media such as Facebook.
In conclusion, it is now more challenging for everybody, including governments, military and police operations, politicians, business organizations and terrorists to protect their secrets and/or maintain their reputation, given the strong evolution of social media and internet itself to the society.
