Summary of The Battle of Trenton:
1.During the battle of Trenton German Colonel Johann Rall(fought for the British) had 1,400 men under his leadership;his men(Hessians) were exhausted and unprepared for anything that would come their way.
2. But George Washington had an army of 2,400 men who he divided into three groups but left behind 500 men to keep the campfires going so the British thought they hadn’t moved),1,900 men under Colonel John Cadwalader and 700 men under General James Ewing’s command
3.Washington crossed the icy rivers in boats with cannons and headed towards Trenton, while both men Colonel Cadwalader and General Ewing weren’t able to carry out their parts in the plan leaving Washington alone to fight.
4.When Washington faced Colonel Rall he tried to establish a defensive perimeter but failed because he got shot while on his horse which ended with a fatal wound leaving his men alone.
5.At the end of the battle 22 men were killed, 92 wounded, 918 captured and 400 escaped; for the Americans two frozen to death and five wounded.

Washington left men behind on the camping grounds while he moved along to Trenton. Ulysses sent his men out to sea while he stayed behind inside a wooden horse with his other men. When George Washington attacks his enemy Colonel Johann Rall, the Colonel tries to defend his men resulting in him getting shot and dying. He left his men alone who were unprepared and tried to do what they had been taught to do while in battle but it was all for no use. In Washington's Crossing, the book states that soon after England came with their 33,000 soldiers in New York in summer during the year of 1776, the much smaller army that made up the American military was close on their heels. Sadly, the American military was pushed from Long Island, Manhattan, and after that continued on to lose a lot of New Jersey and Rhode Island. Large numbers of Americans also proceeded to start signing their loyalty over to the English crown, and Washington's military began to be faced with a shortage of manpower. The remainder of Washington's army retreated to the Western shore of the Hudson River.
George Washington took control of the revolutionary army on 2 July 1775. He took over at outside of Boston, before this his experience was limited to wilderness travel and soldiering. His soldiering experiences had been mainly for his home state of Virginia. The first battle that was of significance in this book was the Battle of Long Island. At this battle Washington and the rebel army are soundly defeated by General Sir William Howe and the British army. After this battle was fought Howe did not follow-up the victory with quick action as the Americans retreated. It could be said that if Howe and the British would continued the attack this rebellion could have been put down right away. This will not be the first time that Howe fails to do this, and it will lead to him being replaced later in the war Sir Henry Clinton. had an opportunity to read a fascinating book called 1776 by David McCullough; this is his tenth Book he has written on the subject. In this endearing novel he describes several significant issues that George Washington had to overcome to secure his ultimate victory in 1783. The book also describes the first year of the American Revolution, especially the triumph of Boston and the failure at New York. The author details the challenges and struggles of creating and maintaining an army and then developing and drilling the militia that will be disciplined in the field of battle. He also writes that there were several problems that George Washington faced while leading the continental army. The first problem was that the militia had poor discipline and had no experience with the military, and the
...didn’t over step his authority or attempt to subvert the army for his own purposes. Instead, George Washington sets the example of the military commander who was subservient to civilian political leadership. He also showed patience and coolness in the face of adversity. On many occasions in the book, the author cites Washington’s expressions of doubt and fears of failure, yet Washington never showed fear or doubt in action in front of his troops.
“Although Howe might logically be expected to resume his overland offensive through the Jerseys, he had already decided to move against Philadelphia by water; Washington had no way of knowing what Howe’s objective would be, but he did have reason to believe that the British would move by water. These points are mentioned because many accounts of the maneuvers about to be discussed are written from the viewpoint that Washington expected Howe to march toward Philadelphia in a continuation of his 1776 campaign (chesco.org).”
There were many battles between the British and the colonists. Lexington and concord, and the battle of Bunker Hill and that's only two. Lexington and concord was the first war engagements held between the British and the people. Two hundred forty people died in Lexington and concord. Next was the battle at Bunker Hill. Bunker Hill was the deadliest battle throughout the revolutionary war. One thousand people perished In this engagement.
Although unknown to the Congress when they appointed Washington to lead the colonies, he would prove to be a great military genius. Washington was simply selected because he was a rich Virginian with everything to lose. In 1776 at the Battle of Long Island, Washington proved that he was a great military leader. Washington narrowly escaped to Manhattan Island, crossed the Hudson and finally reached the Delaware Rive with the British on his tale. Washington was known as a " sly fox" because of his tricky maneuvers to get his troops out of dangerous situations. A few weeks later Washington showed his sly ways once again when he captured a thousand Hessians the day after Christmas. Without Washington's amazing military mind, and his sly maneuvers the Americans never would have defeated the British.
Washington's selection to be the leader of the Continental Army was the wisest choice that the newly formed Continental Congress could have made. Washington's selection as Commander of the Continental Army did more to win the Revolutionary war than any other decision made during the conflict. His personal character epitomizes perfectly the five traits required in a successful general: wisdom, sincerity, humanity, courage, and strictness. Even though the British army was larger, the American army proved to have talented fighters. The Continental Army and the state militias were essentially the two military organizations of the Americans. Throughout the war, the Americans employed only 231,771 men, which meant that the American forces rarely numbered over 20,000. Compared to the British, the American army was small, but their military tactics and skills were excellent. From a distance of 200 yards, an American rifleman could easily kill a British soldier. Many men observed that the British plainly fired in the general direction of the Americans, while the Americans aimed for the heads of the British.
The battle was over. The NVA forces had suffered hundreds of casualties and were no longer capable of a fight. U.S. forces had suffered 79 killed and 121 injured and had been reinforced that would guarantee their safety the safety of all the companies as they medivacd all the wounded and dead, and resupplied.
Washington understood that what lies ahead would be difficult, considering he would be facing the most powerful country in the world. But he probably didn't expect his worst problems to come from his own army, which was an undisciplined and untrained group that would eventually tamper with his great patience. Through it all, he would stay determined and always try to stay one step ahead of the enemy. In the summer of 1775, the Americans prepared to attack the British in Boston. But Washington was informed that they were shorthanded on gunpowder.
He suffered from stage fright and often “blushed and faltered”, (18) even at his inauguration as President, “he trembled and several times could scarce make out to read his speech” (18) This weakness of his is often glossed over as it doesn’t seem to fit in with his image as the towering, imposing “founding father”. Yet today, it is essential for a President to be able to deliver impressive and clear speeches to the whole country. Finally there are some criticisms that he was not as effective General as is often believed. Thomas Paine claimed that he was a bad general whose strategy consisted of “doing nothing” (19). Although Paine had a personal agenda in condemning George Washington as he resented not being appointed Postmaster-General, and then later by not being rescued from French persecution by the government, it is true that George Washington did lose more battles than he won (20) and often did seem to do nothing for long periods of time. There is also the issue of his harsh treatment towards his own soldiers, any who were caught deserting or plundering were “flogged” (21) and he even a “Gallows near forty feet high erected” to terrify the rest into obedience.
Many suspect that they were with Washington only to maximize the hate on both sides of the battle. They went against Washington’s orders to not be the aggressors. Soon large units of British and American soldiers were sent to settle what should have been small battles. The French however were prepared to fight back and even had the Indians as allies to help with upcoming battles. In July, Braddock’s army which consisted of over 2000 British soldiers rode west with George Washington and came upon 250 plus French soldiers with over 600 Indians allies. Nearly 1000 British were killed, unlike George Washington who was unhurt during the battle was soon promoted to commander of the Virginia army for his bravery. (Roark 146)

As they began their retreat, Washington had some men stroke the fires, to trick the English into believing they were bedding down for the night. As they were retreating, the English suspecting an escape attempt sent their ships up the river to stop any possible retreat. As they began to do so a strong wind came and pushed their ships back away from the American side. When dawn came, many men were still on the other side of the river waiting to cross.
