Should Students Get Paid After High School

The student life focuses mainly on education where students have to go to school, perform well in high school and get the grades to go on to their desired college/university in Canada. The schooling that a student gains in the first 25 years of their life is used to get a job in the future and make a living; however, some students might not be motivated enough to ace their education. The benefit of excelling in education is not easily sought out for some students; hindering their future aspirations and limiting their success. Grade 12 is where all marks are imperative and having the best marks will allow the student to pick what he/she wants to do. If students were rewarded with cash, in a sense, would they not be more motivated thus achieving higher grades? The students’ parents should be paid for their students grades in grade 12 at the end of their course on a scale: students from 80-90% will get paid $75, 90-95% will get $125 and 95%+ will get $200. Replacing the scenario with a student in the context will change nothing. The student will be willing and determined to get the grade to receive the immediate reward as it is more foreseeable than the future of the student. Telling the student that by getting good grades will aid them in the future is not enough. The future may seem distant to the student and it may be hard for the student to picture how getting good grades will benefit his/her future. The word “future” to some students feels like an eternity away. Having immediate rewards will target a bigger audience from grade 11 coming into grade 12 to achieve better marks to get the prize. Therefore, students in grade 12 will be driven to attain better grades as a result of the student-parent trust
