My inspiration came from books that I had read as a child. I remember reading books that talked about the mom or dad of the narrator, but the books were almost always sexually discriminatory. The mom role always worked jobs that a woman would typically work. Some examples are a veterinarian, a florist, a stay at home mom, a secretary, a babysitter and so on. The dad role always worked jobs that a man would typically work. Some examples are a doctor, a fireman, an accountant, a police officer, and so on. I used to look for books that would portray a mom role as a police officer, but never did I succeed. It was hard to not be able to see a woman in the career that I wanted to be as a little girl. At times it made me feel like maybe I should not become a police officer because it did not seem socially acceptable. Not only was it hard to find a police officer woman on a book, but also on the streets. As I was starting my homework, I heard my mom yell "Honey! Come down for dinner!!". As I went down the stairs, an aroma of buttery mashed potatoes filled the air. As soon as I sat down at the table, my father asked the same question he does everyday, "what did you learn at school today sweetheart?" "Well, I read a story called "Block Party" and we had to identify the theme of the story, which was that you dont necessarily need a mother to grow up well, get advice, help regarding more personal problems, or to have a female role model in your life. I agree with the theme of the story because if you need advice you can always ask your friends, or or if you are having more personal problems you could go to other relatives in your family. Also, you could have another female role model, such as an aunt or a grandmother.
Are all mothers fit for motherhood? The concept of motherhood is scrutinized in the stories “The Rocking Horse Winner” and “Tears Idle Tears”. In “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H Lawrence the mother, Hester, unpremeditatedly provokes her son into providing for her through gambling. In the story “Tears Idle Tears” by Elizabeth Bowen, Mrs. Dickinson disregards her son’s emotions and puts more emphasis in her appearance than her son’s wellbeing. Hester and Mrs. Dickinson both were inadequate mothers. Both the mothers were materialistic, pretended to love their offspring, and their dominance hindered their children’s progress in life.
I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing. You just take it.” Women throughout the ages have come to know the struggle of finding a voice through an abundance of society given stereotypes and gender roles. Most of these conformities are forced upon young girls at an early age, and often set a precedent as how to act in society. These oppressing social norms may seem inescapable, however through strength and feminist ideals women can overcome these degrading barriers. The literary works of “The Rules of the game” and “If I should have a daughter” are from different time eras and present opposing parenting styles, however, both pieces convey the achievability of becoming an independent women and the ineffectiveness of traditional female stereotypes no matter the time period.
Hoping for the best but expecting the worst, I walked in to English not knowing what to expect. English 111 was boring at times but in many ways helpful. College Composition I main objective is to teach students the fundamentals of academic writing and critical thinking. I, along with my three siblings, were raised by my Mother, who took on both roles. It is completely normal for you to see this now a day, being that the divorce rate is approximately fifty percent. My parents came from good backgrounds, my mother has a Ph.D. in education and my father is retired from the United States Army. He explained the everyday expectation of a police officers, the mental and physical challenges an officer goes through while on duty. The career of a police officer brings a different challenge every day and you have to be mentally and physically ready for anything and anywhere. Studies have shown that there is at least some relationship between the two. Some people claim that violent video games do not cause violence. A recent study concluded that violent video games may be calming. Dr. Ferguson, a child phycologist, also uses the excuse that all children have played video games at least once in their life. Dr. Ferguson and his colleague Dr. Olson, two researchers of this topic, found that there was no increased criminality between high risk teens and playing violent video games. Regardless of doctors' claims, violent video games are known to cause violence because of the amount of screen-time, linked violent fantasies, and the incorporated teaching skills. As children age, video game screen time also increases. A study done in 2000 Dr. Woodard and Natalia Gridina reported that "between ages 2 and 5, children play for twenty eight minutes per day"(Woodard and Gridina, 2000, Media Violence and Children). A more recent study, done in 2002 by noted Phycologists, Dr. Gentile and Dr. Walsh, found that "between ages 2 and 7, children play 43 minutes per day"(Gentile and Walsh, 2002, Media Violence and Children). Whereas, Dr. Buchman and nurse Funk reported that by the time youths reach fourth grade, girls play about four and a half hours per week and boys play about seven hours per week. All of this play time decreases sensitivity to violence. When we talk about English 1110, everyone actually knows the main part of the course is writing. The goal of this class is to improve structural, style of writing, thoughts and performances of students. During this semester, the curriculum includes essays and topics from many different aspects of different issues which are useful to me. From this class, I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. For example, before writing a paper, I always have outline, strategies, arranging and modifying as well as finding ideas to improve my writing style in a better way. Before taking English 1101, I just wrote essay with what I think of that time and did not care whether my essay is understandable or not; however, i have been improved for the past three months. When I see a title, I start to write down all ideas and also create an outline and order of all documents in a reasonable manner. In addition, all response papers that I have done during this semester I started to have different way of thinking by listening my friend's arguments, feedbacks or comments, agreements or disagreements. Those group activities from friends were helpful because I started to recognize what are right and wrong things in my essay. From there, I have my own personal opinions and defend my arguments.
Verbal and written language is how people communicate with each other and encourage thoughts, achieve goals, and build relationships. Speaking a single, or multiple languages, and growing up in different setting can seriously alter the way that people speak the same language. This can either encourage diverse communication or make communication all but impossible. For the most part I speak English fluently, it is the only full language that I can speak and I developed this language growing up in a small farm town in the middle of New Jersey.
There were several instances in my childhood when my Family had a direct influence on me according to my gender. Right from birth my role as an individual was predestined. The gifts I was to receive at a baby shower were all based around my gender. It would have been unheard of for someone to give me pink clothes or flowery decorations at my baby shower. Young boys have always been told not to cry when they fall and scrape their knees. Comments like these from family members definitely had an impact on my aspirations. My dream to be a fire fighter was most likely related to those comments to not cry. Being a fire fighter would definitely be an occupation where stress would be high. If I could be a fire fighter I would definitely have the opportunity to prove to my parents that I could be strong and not cry. I found this idea interesting because it explains how we as individuals live in an androcentric society, but it also explains how women’s achievements are often hidden from history because men want to be the only dominant gender in literature. In literature, women are often expected to read the text by both male and female perspectives, yet males are not expected to do the same. Living in an androcentric society means that women will continue to learn from the male lead, causing women to read texts through a male perspective, having women chose the roles of heroes or males instead of being themselves, having women be kept in the dark to express their ideas. Living in this society makes a woman feel like they need to reinforce their beliefs. Women should be able to learn without following the male’s androcentric canon and not getting punished for interpreting it by their own personal experience. When I was writing this section mom, the only example that I could think of was the story you explained to me a few months back about work. I remember you coming home, very frustrated and tired, and I asked you “what was wrong?” Then you explained to me that you and your male coworker did an amazing job cleaning a house that took both of you about 3 hours to clean. I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
