Factory towns were created by building the factory first, and not worrying about all the other amenities such a schools and grocery stores. This force everyone, including children, to work long hours at the factory to make enough money to survive. The payment they received could only be spent at the factory so this allowed the company to control the prices of food and keep the workers poor. The living conditions were poor if you were an unskilled worker and slightly better if you were skilled. The name of this movement is The Great Migration.
