As Europe began to move out of the Renaissance, it brought with it many of the beliefs of that era. The continent now carried a questioning spirit and was eager for more to study and learn. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, many discoveries were made in subjects all across the realm of science, but it was the doubting and testing of old traditions and authorities that truly made this time into a revolution. The Scientific Revolution challenged the authority of the past by changing the view of nature from a mysterious entity to a study of mathematics, looking to scientific research instead of the Church, and teaching that there was much knowledge of science left to be discovered.

Before this revolution, the Roman Catholic church held a monopoly on most scientific research. The majority of scientists were monks or members of universities where a study of the natural world was viewed through the lens of Scripture. Even Copernicus 's studies of the rotation of the planets and his original heliocentric model of the universe were created to help the papacy build a better calender so that it could properly celebrate Easter. However, during and after the Scientific Revolution, philosophers and scientists began moving toward a belief that the spiritual world was outside of the physical world, and that religious beliefs should be considered separate from scientific study. This turn in thinking is seem in Galileo 's attempt to reinterpret the Bible to fit the new research being done. Despite the Church 's attempts to crack down on theories that contradicted its own beliefs, these new ideas permeated the society. Scholasticism and the European universities of the past had mainly taught from old commentaries and studies and had not been interested in trying to gather new information. Many scholars had come to the conclusion that there was no new knowledge to be gained from nature. During the Age of Discovery and the following Scientific Revolution, however, this old authority was all but destroyed. The 'new world ' of the Americas and Australia were first found and studied during this time, filling Europe with knowledge of new plants, animals, and people groups. Some of the greatest amounts of new knowledge, though, came not from the ocean, but from the sky. The newly invented telescope, first made by Galileo, opened up a vast sea of never-before-seen information about the planets, their surfaces, and their movements.
