The Changes in School Food and Ingredients: Trying to Help Obesity in Children School lunches have been the target for helping reduce obesity in children and adolescent in schools. Since the speech of Mrs. Obama in 2010, school food had been modifying. More healthy ingredients are incorporated in their schools food and other ingredients are been eliminated from the menus. Due to budget cuts and Obama’s speech school lunches has been impacted, the way they prepare them and the ingredients they are using. Before 2010, students from day cares to high schools had been the once having the meal changes in their schools. Obama’s Move program, schools made the change to healthy foods right away. From one school year to other students were offered new healthy food. The most shocking in young students was the complete change. Children are use to eat in a certain way, they preferred tasty foods and even though healthy can also be tasty the school cafeteria’s food did not reach the good taste in their meals. Before all food changes occurred, students seem to like school lunches more; it was a lot less food waste. The majority of students enjoyed food like spaghetti and meatballs, Mac and cheese, they loved pizza every Friday. School kids liked chocolate milk and very few students drank white milk, now chocolate milk is no longer present in their lunch tray. Before, fewer students used to bring lunch from home, and at least in elementary school junk food were not seen as it seen now. The waist of food is considerable students do not like the majority of the food is given and they just throw it away or give it to another students that like that particular meal. Some of the students would eat double portions of food obtained by other pupils. If the school food would change the tasted or if the changes would been little by little, students would be able to accept new healthy food with no problem. There are different ways of making healthy food tasty, using condiments that are not harm to their health or cooking foods but it give a good taste. Because cafeterias do not have enough workers they had to reduce the amount of cooking in the school kitchen. Most of the times they order food from the district that it is precook and package, they only have to warmer up and serve. Another significant change regarding school food is breakfast in classrooms. The cafeteria manager told me that it was a law they pass where they saw the importance of the first meal of the day, and they implemented that too, as another change of Obama’s program. The district order breakfast for students and stuff from a different funding, not from school’s budget. Some teachers explain a student how important is to eat breakfast for their bodies and their health. Teachers share that time eating with students and the students like that. Some teacher do not allowed students to eat junk food during breakfast time and kids respect that, even though they eat some junk food at lunch time at least during breakfast they eat better. Last, the cafeteria manager assistant, added “we need to push students to at least taste the food that they think they don’t like, a lot of the students they see the food and right away they said “I do not like that” but they haven’t event tasted it.” She also told me that our test buds on our thong change all the time, that if a student does not like particular food at that moment may be in two or three
