Scabies is a disease that dates back at least 2,500 years. It is a disease of the integumentary system that causes rashes and extremely itchy skin. It is spread from skin-to-skin contact and caused by a small mite that burrows into the skin. Scabies affects 300 million people all over the world, every single year. Scabies can cause other problems with the body such as chronic heart and kidney disease. Trying to diagnose scabies can be rather tricky. Even the most experienced of people in the medical profession can have problems determining if there are scabies mites in a patient’s skin.
