Rather than focusing on what I don’t have and lack, I will try to appreciate what I do have. I will try to approach the life with an open mindset and not with a victimized mindset. I also want to be able to experience the peace that Liz Murray mentioned of not having to worry about always receiving more than giving. I do not want to surround myself with a restless mentality of counting things I could have and the things I do not have. Cynicism will definitely get the best of people and I do not want to live in a world where everybody scrambles around trying to chase down a materialistic lifestyle while having no concern about others. Liz Murray has taught me to embrace the notion of community in addition to improving oneself. English was a second language for me and without the help of the precious individuals who I have met along my journey I would not been able to write this essay today. I believe that values are taught and learned at an early age. If the teaching is successful, as it was in my case, the student should hold true to the values that he or she was raised with. Everybody is raised with different values, whether the difference is religious, moral, or social, and they should all be respected by others. I will not change or alter my values because they are very important to both my family and me, and I firmly believe in them.

The knowledge acquired during this period of time will be remembered for life; thus, what people do not achieve during this time will become an obstacle that will cause children to be less competent in the future. “The National Ministry of Education assumes the educational policies, within the framework of the proper care to early childhood, as a great challenge and an obligation for the State, the society, and the family” (MEN, 2009, p.13). This can be achieved through greater exposure, thus widens one’s experiences and will be more likely be more accepting of others. Self-awareness will also benefit us to be more accurate in accessing
Values, norms and culture are essential to society’s survival. Roles and standards give groups within a society structure and allow members to know what’s expected of them, socially. As a teacher, parent or leader of a group, you’re expected to teach the group to be conventional and conform to society. It is basic human nature to have the desire to pass on our own values, norms and culture to our kids and/or those we are in command of. We often resort to educating them based on values we’ve been taught by society.
