America is an economy driven by consumerism. In Pollon’s short essay, “The Consumer-A Republic of Fat,” he compares and contrast The Alcohol Republic to the Republic of Fat. Pollon uses rhetorical appeal to persuade and to make his argument appeal to his audience. Pollon was successful in his persuasion of his audience in regards to the comparing and contrasting of consumer driven republics. Pollon is comparing The Alcohol Republic with the Republic of Fat. In the early 1900s, they drank Alcohol much of the same way we are eating foods in present day. Corn whiskey in the 1900s, was cheap and abundant which made it “The drink of choice.” This was much like our high fructose corn syrup, which is found in all sodas and many of our foods. While the culture still seems to view drinking as a negative substance, culture does not view the consumption of a soda, or, sweets as a totally negative thing. Todays culture does not view eating or drinking high fructose corn syrup nearly as negative as drinking. In the early 1900s, America was mainly the only culture of society affected by drinking. In todays society, not only is America severely affected by obesity, but the problem is not limited to just America; many countries in todays society are affected by this epidemic. In the 1820s, farmers could turn their corn into pork or alcohol. Today, you can turn corn into anything from chicken nuggets, and hamburgers to emulsifiers and Nutraceuticals. In 1985, the consumption of all added sugars, has clambered from 128 pounds to 158 pounds per individual. Pollen uses ethos to persuade his audience in his short essay, “The Consumer-A Republic of Fat.” In Rhetorical Appeal, ethos is the credibility of the author. Pollen uses ethos of using a historian to restate his opinion, “As the historian W. J. Rorabaugh tells the story The Alcoholic Republic, we drank the hard stuff at breakfast, lunch and dinner, before work and very often during.” Another example of ethos from the story, Pollon uses a surgeon to give a credible statement about obesity, “According to the surgeon general obesity today is officially an epidemic; it is argueably the most pressing
