When I was a kid, I loved running down to the convenience store with my friends to grab a Pepsi or Coke. My childhood was compromised of the satisfaction of playing for hours on end outside and at the end of the day sitting around with friends drinking sodas and eating random snacks. As kids, no one thinks about the health complications involved with what we eat or drink because…it just doesn’t seem to matter then. The older and maturer we become, the more we start to over analyze and critique the amount and types of food we put into our bodies. Drinking beverages of any sort is a very important aspect to everyone 's life and can even be a bonding experience. For Americans, sugary drinks seem to be a very important aspect when eating any meal throughout the day. Many people seem to think that adding an excise tax will solve the big …show more content…
Sugary drinks have caffeine in them that will make anybody feel energized and more alert in tasks that they are performing...especially when you 're tired! Caffeine is deemed to be safe, as long as you don 't have too much of it. A very important standpoint to this issue is that putting an excise tax on these drinks is a definite infringement on people 's rights to eat or drink whatever they would like. Tobacco and cigarettes are not a needed proponent in someone 's life, but drinks–though they may be sugary–can be argued that they are more important.
There are numerous other ways to control rates of obesity, rather than putting a tax on drinks. Exercise! Obesity is an issue with many causes and sugary drinks are just an extremely minute factor that leads to this. On a bigger scale, you can 't point fingers at Dr. Pepper or Pepsi and say that they are responsible for all obesity in the U.S. That is completely impossible; no single food or beverage is responsible for this
"Why single out sugar-sweetened beverages when cookies, candy, and other products with lots of added sugar and fats are equally unhealthy, consumed in large quantities
Everyday Americans die from the diseases they carry from obesity. Many Americans over eat because their social problems or because they are hereditary. Many plans have been discussed but finding the solution is the problem. Junk foods and unhealthy beverages have corrupted children’s minds all over the nation and putting a stop on it could lead to other benefits. Unhealthy foods and drinks should be taxed and healthy foods should be advertised more to help prevent American obesity.
However, according to this point of view, we should tax sugary drinks. The supporters of this article say that increasing taxes will decrease the possibilities of getting cavities, tooth decay, obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and type two diabetes. Most of the supporters argue that increasing the price of soda by 20 cents would lead to a 16 percent drop in sales.
But it’s doubtful that Americans will look favorably upon regulating their favorite vice. We’re a nation that’s sweet on sugar: the average U.S. adult downs 22 teaspoons of sugar a day, according to the American Heart Association, and surveys have found that teens swallow 34 teaspoons.” By consuming sugar consumers can experience what's known as a “sugar high” a sugar high can have the same effects drugs and alcohol cause. But since sugar is in our everyday lives it would be hard to regulate it. Research shows that the average adult consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar a day the average teen consumes 34 teaspoons of sugar. America is a country that loves sugar from soda to cereal everything has sugar. “Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco, argued in the journal Nature that sugar is addictive and toxic—that it can poison the liver, cause metabolic syndrome (increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes), suppress the brain’s dopamine system, and cause us to crave more. Lustig concluded, controversially, that sugar should be regulated like a drug. Alcohol is regulated because of its ubiquity, toxicity, abuse, and negative impact on society, he wrote, and ‘sugar meets the same criteria.’” Robert Lustig wrote a journal saying that sugar is addictive and a toxin. It says that it poisons the liver and it suppresses the dopamine
According to The World Health Organization, “Obesity is the imbalance between declining energy expenditure due to physical inactivity and high energy in the diet (excess calories whether from sugar, starches or fat) …. Increasing physical activity, in addition to reducing intakes of food high in fat and foods and drinks high in sugars, can prevent unhealthy weight gain” (Who). The World Health Organization has recognized that soda and other sugary drinks a...
In 2007, 40,000L of soft drink was drunk between 400 people which doesn’t include other sugary products ingested throughout the year. Enormous amounts of premature deaths occurred, diseases related to sugar intake spiked and obesity in Amata was at an all-time high.
“To do nothing… would be reckless from a public health and a fiscal standpoint” (Jacobson, 2012, para. 5). When someone uses the word epidemic, we think of sick people or a horrifying disease. That is not what most people think about when they see a bottle of their favorite soda. This has become much more than routine heath concerns. Soda and sugary drinks have become an epidemic in the world, with much of this found in our very own country. In recent years, studies have shown that sugar has increased in our everyday foods, it has also caused the rate of obesity to go soaring, as well as other health issues, namely: diabetes, heart disease, and other diet-related conditions (Jacobson, 2012, para. 2). Do we need all this excess sugar in our
The article, Soda Consumption Does Not Equal Obesity, states that soda is not the only reason people are obese. When people are more active, they are less likely to have an obesity-related illness. Being active plays an important role because people are constantly burning fat, which makes it less likely for them to be overweight or obese. Economists from Emory University declare that soft drinks do not have a big impact on weight. The reason was that when untaxed, soft drinks only represent 7% of a soda drinker’s calorie intake. An article released by the National Association of Convenience Stores states that Virginia and Arkansas are currently taxing soda. “Just look at West Virginia and Arkansas, two states currently taxing soft drinks. Those two states have some of the highest obesity rates in the country,” said Muhart Kent. If taxing soda did not affect obesity in those two states, then it will not affect obesity in any
Surveys have shown that sugar-sweetened beverages are the primary source of added sugar in our diets. According to a Coca-Cola history website, the soft-drinks’ bottle sizes have been enlarged drastically over the past 40 years, basically meaning that we are drinking more soft drinks than ever. As an example, half of the population in the US consume sugary drinks every day, in which about 25 percent gain at least 200 calories from these drinks. Sugary drinks are also the top calorie source in teen’s diets, increasing the risk of diseases such as obesity, diabetes and heart problems from an early stage. It is a significant factor that leads to obesity, so I believe resisting these sugary drinks and promoting healthier products could definitely assist the goal of elevating the number of a healthy
Ranging from heart disease to diabetes the consequences of unhealthy eating are well known across the population, yet not much is being done to stop this. According to the World Health Organization, it is projected that by 2030, Diabetes will become the 7th leading cause of death in the world. Why let things spiral out of control and continue postponing a sugar tax? If there is anything that the US government can do is impose this tax. Even if the change is small in comparison to the entire population of the US, these are potential lives being saved. Just like the worst case scenario of smoking is lung cancer, the worst case scenario of obesity is diabetes. Excess sugar should be considered as big of a threat as any other potentially addictive chemical, and should therefore be taxed like one for the safety of the
Unfortunately, the widespread availability of sugar makes it difficult for parents and children to make healthy, convenient food and drink choices. This is especially important for kids who are still developing their nutritional foundation, metabolism, and hormones, even a little sugar can be harmful. Would you give your children a bottle of poison and allow them to consume it? Of course not, what parent would. But unknowingly that’s exactly what you are doing when you provide your children with any type of sugary drink whether it be fruit juice or a fizzy drink. A 600ml bottle of soft drink can contain up to 16 teaspoons of sugar. The permeation of sugar through today’s society makes it plainly clear to see that placing a tax on sugary drinks is not enough to combat child obesity. This solution is not enough to overcome this issue in the long term. It needs to be coupled with a strong educational campaign which targets, not only children in schools, but adults in the community through both television, radio and
Coke continuously out-stands Pepsi, even though they share a very similar taste and colour, however Coke should not be the drink that receives all the love and attention for what it offers. Despite their similar soda colour, the drinks actually contain some different ingredients, which produce a different taste, and affect the body differently. Furthermore, the way the companies markets their drinks makes a huge contribution to how successful their products will become. The major element for success however stems from their impact on society and how the companies utilize their social power to evolve. The two major soda companies are constantly head to head with one another, yet it is what they do that sets them apart.

Have you ever thought how much soda you consume and how bad it can be for you? Many people will drink soda instead of water, simply because it tastes better. The government should limit the intake of sugary beverages because it can lead to many different problems such as heart disease, obesity, and overall it is an unhealthy life-style. “The average person consumes almost 100lbs of sugar a year, with the single biggest source being soda.” A sugary beverage occasionally would be ok, but drinking it every day would cause problems for you overtime. People drink, more soda than they do water. People should be consuming at least eight 8-ounce glasses a day. Mostly no one will drink that amount of water a day.
