A universally acknowledged poem of Tang “Exhausting my eyes to a thousand miles further, I am ascending one more story of the tower.” is the proper to sum up my ENG class this semester. During this period of time, I have already finished the Summary and Response, Rhetorical Analysis, Argumentative Essay and several quizzes. Writing each essay is like ascending one step to get the top, especially in phrases choices, rhetorical devices, works cited page and so on. Now I will reflect on those writing experiences from the perspective of each essay individually. Summary and Response was the first essay I wrote. First, I had to choose a speech which was full of various rhetorical devices. There is a huge discrepancy between Chinese and English essays. Chinese essay convey the author’s view implicitly. Elegant and magnificent words are widespread in Chinese essays. Being limited by my English level and cognition, I only read some academic articles. These articles are specific for their academic purpose. These articles usually have a fixed model and the words are boring. I spent nearly four days thinking about how to find some rhetorical devices. From what I know from my previous language learning, most of the English version rhetorical devices are not professional. Sometimes I even complain to the professor that the English is lacking of beautiful language. I still remember those four days were really a period of tough times. Every day I woke up and sat in front of the laptop’s screen. Time passed by soon. I did nothing at all. Although I went through the whole speech article over and over again, I could found nothing is worth analyzing. When I was almost desperate, I read a model essay whose author is a senior, I got the inspiration suddenly. Then I searched for some English rhetorical devices like metaphor online. When I prepared adequate knowledge, I started writing and finished it in no more than three hours. From the Professor, Google and other sources, I realized that English rhetorical devices is quite different from that in Chinese. However, the purpose is the same. They are widely used for adding more interesting expressions in the essay. By metaphor the author can describe an abstract thing in a concrete thing. Using parallelism sentence instead of the normal sentences will persuade the audiences effectively and increase the credibility.
