Author Jean Toomer who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the Harlem Renaissance period. Particularly, in his works titled “People” and “Harvest Song” written in 1923 we can see evidence pf the characteristics, themes and style identified with the African American movement which was extant in American letters between 1954-1968. As a representative of such a movement, Jean Toomer then remains one of the most identifiable and iconic writers of his time.

When he got married to novelist Margery Latimer who was white, in his marriage license it stated that Toomer was white, Margery Latimer died of childbirth leaving him with their daughter. Toomer then remarried Marjorie Content, who was also white. Toomer had a friendship and romance with artist Georgia O’ Keeffe. Some of his Schoolmates, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Rudolph P. Byrd said that Toomer chose to be seen as white.
Toomer graduated from all black, Dunbar High School. After graduating he began traveling nonstop attending different colleges in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Chicago and New York. In New York, he wrote a lot of short stories, plays and poems, he wrote one of his most famous one, Blue Meridian, which talks about the desire for the the people to come together as an “American” race.
In 1922 he became a school principal in Sparta, Georgia; living in the south made him start writing heavily about African Americans. Eventually publicizing his most famous work, Cane. Cane is a collection of stories and poems all about black life in the 1920’s, Cane was an important part of the Harlem Renaissance time period.
