Recommended: Public policy gun control

One may ask “Why are Democrats and Republicans always fighting?” To know the answer to this question requires the knowledge of the development of these two parties. The Republican Party was established just prior to the Civil War and gained major recognition when Abraham Lincoln, a Republican became the President of the United States in 1860. The elephant is regarded as their symbol based on a carton that portrayed the new party as an elephant. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party can trace its roots all the way back to Thomas Jefferson where they were known as Jeffersonian Republicans. They adopted the donkey as their symbol due to Andrew Jackson being publically nicknamed ‘jackass’ over his position of ‘let the people rule.’ In essence, these two parties see differently on a variety of topics, such as tax policy and crime, but can put aside their differences for the betterment of society.

While Republicans are known to be staunchly conservative and view topics such as abortion and same sex marriage as appalling, Democrats believe in the aforementioned topics and push for a certain type of liberty that is starkly different from their Republican counterparts. Democrats tend to be progressive on certain issues that would have caused alarm in the past, such as abortion. Yet, they austerely believe that many people should not own guns and promote strict gun laws. On the contrary, Republicans tend to be rigid on certain topics, such as same sex marriage, believing that marriage is between a man and a woman and believe that everyone is entitled to a weapon, such as a gun, for protection. As shown above, they vastly differ on social issues and certain beliefs (e.g. marriage between a man and woman or strict gun laws) are huge criteria to be a member of either
