Reflective Essay: What I Learned In My Writing Class

I feel like I have been pretty successful this semester with writing. There are definitely things I need to work on, but overall, I feel pretty good about my essays. Last year I was fortunate to have Mrs. Farr for Language Arts. This course really pushed me to improve my writing. The emphasis in this course was on structure and format which prompted me to really consider the formation of a thesis and topic sentence. However, all our writing pieces were focused on analysis of poetry or short stories leaving little room for creative writing (I will have to tell you about my comments on the state of the turtle from The Grapes of Wrath that Mrs. Farr shot down). Creativity and prompt ideas come easily to me. Where I struggle is with finding the words. I can’t always put my ideas into words that make sense to others, but they make sense to me. Well thought out articulation requires multiple revisions on my part. As I have moved through this class I have recognized this in my writing; I ask my mom or dad to read over my work to give me input on my clarity. I think I’m a hard worker and strive to actually think along my own lines and not just copy whatever my friends are writing. So what I mean by that is if we are writing an argument essay, I think I do a good job of not just picking the easiest side. I enjoy the thought process that is required to make a strong argument or to take the less obvious side. I want my writing to be interesting and unique so I think the fact that I want my work to be different from everyone else’s is a good trait to have when it comes to writing. It gets boring reading the same kind of writing over and over again, you as a teacher probably understand that more than anyone else does, and I don’t want my work to be added to the “boring” pile.
