As it is, my senior year, I have accomplished spiritual and moral guidance by participating in the Hispanic Church Choir and taking religion class. I will be describing how they have helped me grow spiritually and morally. This year I notice a huge growth in my spiritual life. When I attend mass in the Hispanic community I go with so much devotion. Due to the beautiful music I get to sing. When I sing with the choir if feel important in the mass. Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Growing up on the south side of Chicago in the roughest neighborhood in the city I learned a lot from others and just observing my surroundings. At times, I would always think to myself my situation could always be worse than it was, and that there is always someone who is doing worst off than me. But my situation turned from being in a bad position to being in a position where my mother would come to lose her mother and our home that we had been living in, all in the same year. After losing her mother and bother my mom lost herself in her emotions and shut down on everyone and with that came the loss of a home for me and my siblings and her job. Shortly after my mom began to go back to church and so did we. It was the first time in a log time that we had attended church and it played a big part in a learning experience for me and my siblings. Through the days that came to pass going to church sparked a desire of wanting to help others who had or are struggling to get by. My mentor, Pastor, and teacher deserves appreciation for helping my mother through a hard time and keeping me and my siblings active in a positive manor.

My grandma was the source of knowledge of the Hispanic culture for me. Through her sweet broken English to the eloquent way she spoke Spanish, I was always intrigued with her behaviors, beliefs, and values. One time she told me to learn Spanish fluently, and I responded with “it’s too hard grandma and I really don’t need to at this time”, and I’ll never forget with what she told me. She said, “Mija, it’s not about any reason that stops you, it’s about who you are. When you don’t learn and embrace the Hispanic culture, where I come from, you are not doing well. After listening to the essays on This I Believe, my perspective on my religion and the world has been reconsidered. Whitney Harris challenged me to rethink the origin of the plant we call home, and the forgiveness of God. Penn Jillette imposed a different view of morality upon me. Lastly, Joel Engardio challenged me to consider the way I tolerate others and the meaning of true liberty. I believe that the Buddhist ideology that people should think for themselves should we widespread, for I know I am not the only person who is a Catholic because I was raised one.
The Black Voices, Gospel Choir, had a huge impact on the lives of students in the study. It helped African American students to create a sense of belonging on predominantly White Institution. By establishing a sense of belonging on campus, while reducing feelings of marginalization, gospel choir participation enabled African American students at a PWI to persist in college. The Black Voices afforded participants opportunities to develop ethnic pride and understanding. Despite differences in the impetus for their involvement in the gospel choir, participants identified advancing knowledge about Black culture and the Black community on campus, representing the Black race to White peers and faculty members, and learning about one’s own culture.
Everyone knows that in order to truly appreciate something sometimes you have to do without. I think that this can be related to my Catholic faith and studying about the Jewish faith. After reading the book, "To Life", I value my faith that I have much more. It has also helped me to appreciate the Jewish faith. Lastly, it has enlightened my mind with appreciation for the Jewish faith and how it has been a building block for our faith.
Understanding and examining what others have said about topics that have not normally been talked about has sparked an interesting conversation. I have been able to gain insight on issues from two different perspectives giving me a better understanding on how people are affected by the topics I have chosen as my focus.In this semesters Gender Studies class discussion about virginity, femininity, and body image stood out the most because it influences everyday life. Getting the opportunity to ask to close friends what they felt about these topics was fascinating.

The Latin American music scene is an amazingly diverse, engaging and entertaining music culture. Thomas (2011) explains, “…Latin American music has engaged in ongoing dialogue and cultural exchange that has profoundly affected music making in Europe and the United States and, more recently, in Africa and Asia as well”. This paper will be describing different aspects of the music culture from its musical features, to the historical aspect of this interesting music culture. Also, I will discuss a personal experience with Latin American music.
