Throughout this course, I have learned a lot regarding the writing process and have been able to further practice and adapt my writing style accordingly. To start off, I learned how an interesting and engaging title is important in order to grab a reader’s attention. Although there are many different styles that can be used when forming a title, I found that titles are most intriguing when they are formed as a question. Through writing my essays and proposal on child labor and its solution, I also learned the importance of citing scholarly sources. Because of the large quantity of information readily available online, it is time consuming to sort through the articles in order to locate a peer-reviewed and reliable source. Audience describes who the intended readers are, such as the professor and peers. Purpose is what you are trying to accomplish with your paper, it is the information you want your readers to know. Genre determines the category of writing such as academic writing. Logos persuades readers using logic, such as providing facts and statistics. Ethos persuades readers of an author’s credibility, using sources from authors who are experts in their respective field. Pathos persuades by appealing to a reader’s emotions, such as mentioning the conditions children work in. Organization refers to the way a paper is structured; it allows the information to flow smoothly from sentence to sentence and from paragraph to paragraph. Tone is the attitude the writer uses towards the subject and is conveyed through word choice. Tone helps the reader understand the writer’s feelings towards a particular topic and can portray a variety of emotions such as humorous, witty, and heartbroken. Not only was this handbook useful, but also it was informative and I learned many important aspects of writing. From the handbook, I learned how to quote an indirect source and how to cite an image, as these two concepts are important when writing an academic essay. I learned how to properly use parenthetical reference, the different variations of in-text citations, and when to use parenthetical references. In addition to, I learned why to use citation in academic writing and how to format the works cited page. In the critical thinking section, I learned some important questions to ask myself when finding sources. In the research section, I learned to avoid using an excessive amount of source material as this sometimes causes confusion for a reader. When going back and fixing grammar mistakes, the sentence grammar section was very helpful as was the punctuation and mechanics section. This section offered me information on how to correct my grammatical and punctuation
