As the Civil War ended in 1865, the country was crippled by the effects of the war. The war that was fought to keep the Union whole had become a fight to end slavery. As country began to build back up during Reconstruction, political, economic and social conflicts abrew during the war would continue through Reconstruction. Reconstruction challenged society as White Southerners choose to use their freedom in violence and the “superior” race and blacks attempted to be treated equal in their lives as freed men and women. Reconstruction especially targeted the defeated South as their main source of income, cotton, would decline with the abolishment of slavery in 1865. America’s first terrorist group, the Ku Klux Klan was formed in 1866 to torment blacks and White Republicans. A.W. Tourgee on his Letter on KKK activities (1870) describes how the KKK broke into homes who were tolerant to blacks and White Republicans. The KKK was moderated by government to the best of America’s ability however, soon the South would become so filled with racial violence that blacks would obey organizations such as the KKK in fear of their lives. For White Southerner’s they saw this terrorism towards blacks as their freedom. White Southerners often blamed the war on blacks and were still furious that they could no longer own slaves. They believed that their place as the higher and more superior race granted them the “freedom” to maintain this place. White Southerner’s saw it as their duty to stop the progression of blacks, especially when it came to making a living on Southern land. While blacks believed they were entitled to land in the South to finally put all of their previous farming work into a profit of their own, White Southerner’s created expensive permits to restrict income and employment for blacks. Having land in the country often meant independence. The South preventing blacks to have their own land barred them from yet another freedom.
