A Pyramid of Leadership Success in Nursing There are lot of theories and opinions about what makes a good leader. People who want to become a good leader not only have to have the will to take on the job, but they need to have certain traits and qualities that are characteristic of a good leader. The trait theory of leadership supports this claim that some people are endowed with certain characteristics that make them more capable of being a good leader than others. Many leaders and researchers have come up with certain traits that make people great leaders, whether it is being a leader in a business, organization or a leader of a sports team. His resume consists of 10 national March Madness championships, which includes seven consecutive championships, four perfect seasons, one losing season and set the all-time record for 88 consecutive victories, all while coaching for the UCLA Bruins (Wooden 2009). A lot of the times, the first type of medication we may offer a patient may not be successful, but that doesn 't mean we should stop helping this patient. As nurses, we always have to be on our toes and be able to adapt to any situation and come up with new ideas or solutions to problems we may face. As a leader, many people will look at your character, or your condition according to Wooden. He explains that ability may get you to the top, but character keeps you there (Wooden 2009). Wooden goes on to explain the importance of skill as a leader, an important thing in nursing. He explains that complete competence is required. You must be able to execute all elements of your job or you become partial performer. Experience is valuable. Skill is more valuable. Together they are invaluable (Wooden 2009).
