Recommended: importance of leadership in lord of the flies
In Lord of the Flies, leadership is shown in a variety of ways. Ralph is your ideal leader, he’s a good person, looks out for others, is selfless, and always has a goal in mind. Jack is a power hungry leader, bound and determined to have the power for one person, himself. He doesn’t care what happens to the others around him as long as long as he himself is happy. Simon is the spiritual leader, being all knowing and guided by what he feels from his surroundings. Piggy is the smart leader, thinking logically and with reason to achieve his goals, whilst still minding the others out of respect. All these leaders can be great in their own way, but it begs the question; what kind of leader am I? If I had to change my name and be a character in the novel, which character would he write me as? First we have to ask ourselves, what makes a good leader? Depending on who you ask, that answer will vary. A good leader is someone who is very goal oriented, but bases their goals as a group, not on one’s own desires. A goal oriented leader would use language such as, “We need to get this done,” rather than, “I need this done”. You see this in the novel from Ralph when he is very insistent on keeping the signal fire lit, so as there can be a chance for rescue. Another great quality of a …show more content…
Ralph is the leader whom I feel I exemplifies my own traits the best and who I would be if I was a character in the novel. All of the things he does as a leader are things that I would do too. He is goal oriented and begins with the end in mind, which are attributes that will send his group, or any group for that matter, forward to their version of success. I can’t say that I would be perfect in the same situation, but I do know that having the same ideas as Ralph, I would have been able to get the tribe just as far, if not
Leadership is something that stands out in people; the ability to show courage, initiative, responsibility, and determination. Within a group, people tend to look for an individual with these traits to follow. The main protagonist in William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, Ralph who was immediately elected leader by a group of schoolboys who were stranded on the uninhabited island due to a plane crash, strives to recreate a civilized society to which he was accustomed to previously and apply it to the group of adolescents that accompany him. The qualities of leadership Ralph possess deemed him to be a fitted leader as they are demonstrated throughout the course of the novel by keeping order among the group, appearing confident in his leadership
According to Peter Drucker, he claims, “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Leadership is a commitment that is meant to be kept and done accurately. Leading a group or a society can lead to dreadful obstacles, but it’s your responsibility to have a solution to end. Ralph and Jack as a leader cause a majority of downhill for the boys. Affecting themselves and their surroundings to abruptly fall into pieces. Which lead to a mass destruction of the island, Lord of the Flies. The devastating events on this island lead to the massive chaos of Lord of the Flies, blaming Ralph and Jack for denial, lack of cooperation and inefficient leadership.
Leadership is a trait that many people have naturally and others try to obtain. Many people consider themselves a good leader when they fail to carry out the characteristics leadership require. In the book, “Lord of the Flies”, Ralph is a better leader than Jack because of the traits he possesses. That is why certain skills are necessary to be considered a successful leader.
There is an unknown perfect science to being a leader. Some say that this is something you can attain over time with training or guidance, and others say it's a talent you must be born with. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, one of the main characters Ralph, is elected the leader. The reason he is elected the leader isn't boldly laid out for the reader, but what is noticed, is that Ralph carries the true essence of a leader. Ralph can be seen as a great leader by the way he has everyone's best interest in mind, by the way he sets certain rules to maintain a civil society, and how he calls assemblies to address the issues that he has become most concerned with.
For years, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, has been a staple in college, high school, and even middle school classes. The eloquent story follows a group of young boys stranded on a jungle island. They are left thousands of miles away from civilization and are left to survive by themselves. Throughout the story, many insights in leadership are seen through the power struggle between Ralph and Jack. Both have extremely different styles of leadership with varying levels of success. Lord of the Flies teaches me about leadership in the initial selection of the leader, how they solve problems, and how they motivate others.
A leader is someone who leads a group, organization or country. Furthermore, a good leader is someone who has the ability to lead people effectively using only their positive leadership qualities. The novel Lord of the Flies illustrates that everyone possesses a variety of positive leadership qualities, as is evident through Jack, Ralph, Simon, and Piggy's different leadership qualities.
Characters and people who are described as “good leaders” have certain qualities that show that they are a good leader. Some of these qualities like being brave, responsible, and selfless. Ralph from Lord of the Flies is a good example of a character who demonstrates all of these qualities while he is on the island with the other boys. Good leaders demonstrate the quality of being brave by sacrificing themselves for their followers. Successful leaders show the qualities of being responsible by doing what's best for the people you lead, even if it's not what they want. To demonstrate that you are a selfless leader you would put others before yourself, and do things that need to get done but other people don't want to do.
For centuries, humans have tried to identify the personality traits that should belong to a successful leader. When Niccolo Machiavelli wrote The Prince in 1532, he addressed this issue. William Golding did the same in Lord of the Flies by illustrating Jack and Ralph’s grapple for power over the boys on the island. Jack’s generally violent and cruel disposition, as well as his lack of concern for the other boys and the island itself, makes it seem strange when he becomes chief. However, in Lord of the Flies, Machiavellian teachings can be used to explain Jack’s personality and rise to leadership on the island, as well as his creation of a totalitarian government.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
A world without order will lead to disaster! Humans need order to help guide them into the right path. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, he uses symbolism to give us a hint of the savageness in all humans, civilized or not. In this book, boys are stuck on an island. While they were trying to make a structure of traditions they had at their home, the boys voted Ralph to lead. Jack wanted to lead, so over time, he persuaded the other boys from structure and reason to the savage mindset. This caused a separation between the boys and bloodshed. The conch is very important in the book because it represents leadership and order until, later on in the book when the conch shell’s authority weakened and nobody listened to the conch anymore, which shows how humans naturally dislike being told what to do and when to do it.
In the novel, Lord of The Flies, by William Golding, is about a group of boys plane crashing on a deserted island without any type of parent or adult figure. Ralph, Piggy, and Jack all play major roles throughout the novel. Ralph was the leader of the group and made the rules and tasks for everyone. Piggy is the middle – man, he does not have any responsibilities but to use his glasses to make fire. Jack is the leader of the hunters group; they go searching for food so that everyone can eat. In Lord of The Flies, Ralph, Piggy, and Jack all are main characters in the novel. They all show what responsibilities they have on the island and what changes they experience, throughout the period of time they are on the island. A group of boys are stranded
The plane crashes, there are no adults, no people, just you alone. You find another person and are very relieved. You use a shell to summon the rest of the people on the Island. They first thing you find you need to do is build a leadership. You pick a leader built of democracy. It starts out well but then you find there is more than one type of leadership on the Island and some of your opinions change. There were many different types of leadership in The Lord of the Flies written by William Golding. Having Jack, Ralph and Piggy in mind this paper is going to show you that there were three main differences of the leadership in Lord of the Flies.
In the novel, The Lord of the Flies, leadership is one of the main important qualities. If I had to choose between Jack and Ralph to follow in the story, I would choose Ralph. Although he ended up struggling near the end of the story, I still found him to be a good leader.
A leader in the Lord of the Flies is responsible for the welfare of the boys. To ensure the well-being of everyone while they are on the island the leader must be able to make good decisions, listen to every member of the group, and maintain a clear mind despite the uncivilized environment. Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy are those whom are on the island and that are capable of doing all of. The qualities are essential to a good leader as without them, the little civilization remaining would be abolished. Each member shows their leadership qualities in a variety of ways, yet none of the boys grasp all of the qualities required to have a flawless civilization. Considering their age, it is remarkable how well developed their skills and understanding of leadership is.
When we work together in a team, or in a broader sense as a society, the leader takes on the most important role. It is the leader that helps prioritize activities and direct people’s thought process in the right direction. They are the ones who have the ability to bring the group together as a whole. Because of this, not anyone can be a leader. Only people with certain qualities and abilities are able to fill this role. So what makes a good leader? There is a defined path and specific characteristics that makes someone a good leader.
