Pyramid of Success: For the Better an Athlete and Person.
Success is not given to you or something you are born with it’s something that is earned through morals and hard work. The simple idea of success comes in many forms and can be interpreted in many of different ways. John Wooden is one of the most renowned basketball coaches in the world. He also had a variety of different accolades to his name. He was the head coach at UCLA for over 20 years where he won ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year period. He also was named national coach of the year six times. He played basketball at Purdue where he was the first to be named All-American three times.

To help understand his pyramid you first need to understand what the pyramid consists of and how it was created. John Wooden spent many years trying to identify a variety of different behaviors and ideas that an athlete needs to be successful. These behaviors are what he believed were necessary to achieve his ideas of success and leadership. John Wooden’s was a very religious man so a lot of his ideas and concepts derive straight from the Bible. Wooden “pyramid of success” consists of 25 Building Blocks that include discipline, faith, patience and self-control (Lasley and Benson 6). In figure 1 you can see one John Wooden’s pyramid. There are a variety of different types of the pyramid because of its popularity. The pyramid has been stolen, plagiarized and copied many of times. It has also inspired others to help create their own models (Wooden and Carty n. page.). For example “The PRE is patterned after Wooden’s Pyramid of Success and built upon key principles of patient-centered communication. Like Wooden’s pyramid, the PRE symbolizes stability and durability and is a tangible teaching tool that ‘‘learners can see, study, and follow’’ (Epner and Baile 39).
