Leadership requires nurses to obtain clear, concise, and fundamental competencies and characteristics to effectively lead a team (Hassmiller, 2012). An effective leader is passionate, leads by example, works in teams, advocates for others, communicates in problem solving, evaluates outcomes, and makes needed changes to provide quality care (Sullivan, Kiovsky, Mason, Hill, & Dukes, 2015). It is important that nurse leaders are assertive, committed, make ethical and competent decisions, employ critical thinking, and implement changes based on current or future nursing situations and dilemmas (Dyess, Sherman, Pratt, & Chiang-Hanisko, 2016). Nursing leadership also involves exploring needs, improving methods, creating models, and applying evidence-based research (Institute of Medicine, 2010). To provide quality patient centered care, it is imperative that each member of the interprofessional team maintain accountability, trust, and respect for each other (Hassmiller, 2012). To be in an interprofessional leadership role, the nurse needs to realize that each member is critical to the effectiveness of the team; therefore, it is essential for each member to work together and have effective communication and listening skills (Sullivan, Kiovsky, Mason, Hill, & Dukes, 2015). It is also important for nurses in leadership roles to know when to lead and when it is necessary to follow (Hassmiller, 2012).
