Pursuing A Degree In Biblical Archaeology

When people ask me what I am studying, most do not expect the answer, “Archaeology.” This is commonly followed up by a shocked, “Why?” I have always loved history and to be offered the opportunity to make history come alive - that is a dream come true.

In April I will graduate from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah with a B.S. in Anthropology and Sociology (double major). As you are probably aware, in the States Archaeology falls under Anthropology. This has exposed me to different and multiple views and theories, hence incorporating more than the historical perspective into my education. As mentioned before, I love history. However even more than that, I love the stories and cultures presented to us in the Bible. I believe archaeology has the privilege of uncovering and illuminating the whys and hows of the past, thus presenting the world with more than what some have considered mere myths and origin stories. Biblical Archaeology is the link between the ancient lines and verses and the everyday lives of actual individuals and cultures they represented. As to why I want to study at Tel Aviv University, I am highly aware of the university’s prestigious reputation. Chesterton once said that “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.” While this quote can apply to multiple situations, I think it sums up an overall attitude I personally have regarding life and how to face problems or roadblocks. I believe that my initiative to find a way to study Biblical Archaeology while attending an university that does not even offer a class on it is an excellent example of why I would be suitable for this program. I take initiative and am not held back when things look difficult. I look for solutions, rather than hide from
