The Genetically Modified Organisms Controversy For the past 20 years, genetically modified organisms have been a huge argument. Many people are debating on whether producers should be able to use genetically modified organisms in foods or not. The following article will have information about the benefits, risks, the foods facing problems, and other additional information on genetically modified organisms. To start off the article, we will talk about the benefits. To start off, there are many benefits to using genetically modified organisms. The following will be stated by “Fight the GM Food Scare”. Connecticut and Maine became the first states that required a label on all foods that had some sort of GMO ingredient in it. This meant that they had to put a label on the foods with genetically modified organisms that said “Contains GMO Ingredients” or something similar to that. Around 70% of the food in the United States contains some sort of genetically modified organism ingredients. Some of those foods are tomatoes, corn, rice, and peas. There are a few groups that say that genetically modified foods are just as safe as regular foods. Those groups are called the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the World Health Organization and the European Union. The year of 1997 became the first year Europe used genetically modified labels on foods that had the ingredients. 2 years later in 1999, Europe had taken off their genetically modified labels and took the genetically modified ingredients out of the foods.
