In order to survive in an environment with no food, water, or shelter some people first skill they want to learn is how to catch food or build a fire, but in reality the main skill needed is the psychology of survival. Being put in that type of environment will most likely cause stress so the first thing to remember is to know yourself. Take time before the release into the wild to discover who you really are. Learn how to use your strong qualities and try strengthening the weaker ones. If you have difficulty doing it by yourself ask family or friends to help you out. Keep a calm and clear mind when a situation occurs. Do not underestimate the situation at it as that will just make the situation worse. Also, never go into the experience with unrealistic goals or expectations. When this happens, you are setting yourself up to fail before it even begins. Try to remain in a state of hope when disaster occurs but not too much. Having too much hope will lead to you feeling overconfident and on top of the world, which may lead to an accident happening. Most likely something in your survival will lead to stress and being panicked in that moment will deteriorate the situation. If available set a session with a CBT or DBT therapist to see if they can teach you some methods of stress management. When this is not able to happen practice your relaxation and time management skills. Practice counting to ten or try grounding yourself by using your five senses to take control of the environment. Some time management skills that may be useful are figuring out how to travel at night if you end up being late to something.
