1. What are some possible reasons for the carelessness of Tom’s colleagues?
Feelings of anger, jealousy, and resentment might account for the carelessness. Some of Tom’s colleagues may believe that they were better suited for the position and are upset that they didn’t get promoted. Other colleagues might be unhappy that Tom is now their manager instead of just one of the gang. Another reason for the carelessness could be their friendship with Tom. They might be taking advantage of that friendship by slack-off, thinking that Tom won’t say anything.

I would also warn him that not everyone on staff will be happy for him, but not to take it personally. I would tell him to be empathic but not to get drawn into a conversation about their hurt feelings. I’d tell him to instead, discuss with them their individual goals as well as the goals of the department. I would advise him to include the staff in the decision making process whenever appropriate, but always maintain a professional relationship with them. I would tell him to treat everyone with respect and expect them to do the same. I would also tell him that I would be available anytime he needed my input.

4. How can Tom regain his confidence in leadership, while still receiving respect from others?
Tom has to remember that he was given a promotion for a reason. His supervisor believes that Tom has the strengths and abilities to be a manger and was the right person for the job. Tom must believe this too. Tom should set high standards for himself and the staff. Mediocrity is not acceptable. Finally, he needs to listen to what his staff has to say. They should feel that he is working with them and that they are all in this together, working toward a common goal.
