Role of Police Psychologists The role of police psychologist in community policing is composed of: (a) assessing law enforcement behaviors when working in the community and identify officers who are at risk of using excessive force (Scrivner, 1994); (b) Create programs to assist offenders with mental illness obtain treatment instead of being incarcerated (Fay, 2002); (c) educate law enforcement officers on diversity in the area they are patrolling; and(d) educating law enforcement officers on interacting with individual with disabilities (Fuller, 2016). This writer is interest in this area of policing psychologist due to social media has placed a negative disposition on law enforcement officer. Many people fail to understand the various stressors law enforcement officers are challenged with on a daily bases. Many law enforcement officers lack sufficient multicultural awareness when interacting with individual of different cultural. We are taught to make eye contact when having a conversation. However, it is important for law enforcement officers to recognize that various cultures do not uphold to the same custom (Ainworth, 2002). Wilfrid Laurier University (2016) the use of effective communication utilizes good verbal and non-verbal communication, as well as attentive listening skills. When law enforcement officers use these skills, they are able to gain understanding of the events that took place, in addition to empathizing with the individual, show them respect to build a positive relationship.
