Many people today have dogs as a pet, and it is fairly simple to care for their companion: providing food, water, shelter, and care. However, caring for previously abused animal is so much more difficult. About two years ago my dad and I were driving and we saw a dog on the side of the road. This dog was super skinny and had scars covering her body. We immediately put her in the car and took her to the vet. This dog was held at the vet for a few days and then went up for adoption. As a family, we decided we wanted to adopt the dog and give her a new life. From the second we got her she was very timid and scared of any loud noises or fast movements. After more than two years she has become more comfortable with us but sometimes acts afraid around strangers and still shows signs of abuse. This is just one good turnout for a abused dog, however, there are so many dogs that do not have the opportunity to have a better life which is a problem that must be fixed.

Determining Michigan's animal abuse laws is section 750.50 of the Michigan penal code. This code defines animal abuse as not providing an animal with the essential means for life, providing sufficient space for an animal to live, tying body parts of an animal together, and “Tethering a dog unless the tether is at least 3 times the length of the dog as measured from the tip of its nose to the base of its tail and is attached to a harness or non choke collar designed for tethering” (“Animal Cruelty Laws” 37). Animal abuse, punishable by law can serve you “A fine up to $1000 and/or imprisonment up to 93 days and/or community service for not more than 200 hours,” for a first offence and may present continual
Of course, if the poor dog is being beaten and tortured soon the dog will react to defend itself. "Susie's Hope", for instance, a movie based on a true story, demonstrates how these stereotypes are perpetuated. Donna the main character, survived a pit bull attack and as a result, had a miscarriage. Neglected and abandoned this pit bull lived approximately two houses down Donna's house. The owner left the dog chain to a tree with no food nor water.
For example, the famous NFL quarterback, Michael Vick and his partners ran the Bad Newz Kennels. They bred, trained, and forced dogs to be killers in dog fighting rings. The horrors of what went on in this so call “kennel” are atrocious and is hard to believe that any of those animals made it out of there. Animal control rescued 66 dogs and 51 were pit bulls. All but one dog passed the Temperamental test. Number 86, a black pit bull puppy, named Audi, was one of the 66 dogs. Despite being chained to a tree and left outdoors with no socialization and very little food or water, Audi showed his flexible and forgiving nature. Through a loving home, proper training, and socialization with other dogs and people, Audie had a new chance at life. Whether owners abuse their dogs intentionally or not, it alters their behavior. Signs of such abuse includes starvation, lack of shelter, signs of trauma, being tied up and left alone, poor sanitation, extreme submissive or aggressive behavior, and over breeding. If you witness animal cruelty, immediately report it to the police, animal control, or a local
Contrary to popular opinion, abuse has reared its ugly head in purebred pedigree dog breeding since historical times. What many people think of when a purebred dog comes to mind is a beautifully preserved embodiment of the true breed. The reality is that many of these dogs are victims of abuse. Abuse by definition is “to use (something) to a bad effect or for a bad purpose; to misuse, treat a person/animal with cruelty or violence, regularly or repeatedly over time.” The allure of the perfect dog breed, the best of show, and the cream of the crop is in reality a beautiful front for centuries of animal abuse, exploitation and cruelty. This billion dollar industry is structured in such a way that the abuse is almost admired as opposed to abhorred.
Would you like to try a dog limb with the salad? These are the exact word that I heard from the Korean air hostess when I was first traveling to the USA. I still remember she passed me a wrong serving plate. This incident really affects me a lot because I had never seen meat before in my life. It makes me think about how the meat industry is widely spread and how it is regulated by the governmental agencies. Factory farming is a system of rearing livestock using intensive methods by which poultry, pigs, or cattle are confined indoors under strictly controlled conditions. Today, factory farming dominates the U.S food production to fulfill the excessive demand of the peoples. Most of the factory farms are run by the giant corporations and their
There are many statistics that come with animal abuse. Did you know that 71% of all domestic violence cases state that the attacker harmed the animal(s) as well (animalcruelty.weebly.com ; 5th dot)? 47 out of the 50 U.S. states treat animal abuse as a felony(www.humainsociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/ ;4th paragraph). In all animal abuse cases 64.5% involve dogs (1212 cases, mainly pitbulls), 18% (337 cases), and 25% (470 cases) involve other animals being harmed (www.humainsociety.org/issues/abuse_neglect/facts/animal_cruelty_facts_statistics.html#.u3E...
This sentence is, however, not executed in practice. With some perpetrators not sentenced at all, despite there being evidence that they committed the crime. In some extreme cases, such abusers are allowed to continue keeping pets despite the suffering they cause on animals. I have also encountered other cases whereby abusers walk away scot free with the crime without even a case to answer. This needs to change since the life of an animal’s life also matters.
Did you know a good indicator of domestic abuse is animal abuse? (An Investigator of Pet Crimes) It’s upsetting but true. Animals that have been abused usually are labeled “at risk” at shelters which means to be cautious when approaching. When animals get abused shelters label them as “at risk” animals which makes it harder for them to get adopted. Animal Aid takes “at risk” animals and helps them find the home they deserve. Some abused dogs turn out to be the sweetest dogs who just had a rough past.
I have seen a dog getting abused before and ever since that day the dog has been scared of
When an animal is beaten, it not only causes the animal to be physically harmed, but it can also result in the animal receiving severe psychological damage. The abuse can cause the animal to become afraid of all humans, whether they are abusive or not. Not only can the victim become afraid of humans, it can cause it to even be hostile towards people and other animals. For example, if a dog’s previous owner was abusive, that can end in the dog being aggressive towards others due to its fear of being hurt like he/she was in the past. A tremendous part of animal cruelty that people do not recognize is the abuse of animals is linked to the abuse of humans in many cases. Animal neglect correlates with human neglect, which usually involves a child, elder, or other dependent (Animal Legal Defense Fund). In a survey, seventy-one percent of domestic violence victims said that their abuser also turned their household pet into a victim of abuse (Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics). In a study completed in 1983, eighty-eight percent of families under investigation for child abuse partook in animal abuse along with the abuse of their child (Animal Cruelty Facts and Statistics). Not only does this cruelty affect the victims, but it can also affect the ones witnessing the violence. When someone is in the presence of violence of an animal or another person, it can affect the
There has been over 2 million pet dogs that have ended up at animal shelters. Researchers reported that 65% of the people who left there dogs at shelters was because of bad behavior which is sickening. Dogs that are being poorly exercised and sosialized are one of the main causes of this problem. People try to fix it by breaking the law and letting there pet run free in vacant lots but with the risk of being reported or of the dog getting hit by a car.
“There can be many reason for animal cruelty, like any other form of violence, is often committed by a person who feels powerless, unnoticed, or under control of others. Some who are cruel to animals copy acts what they have seen or that have been done to them, others see harming an animal as a safe way to get revenge against--or threaten-- someone who cares about that animal”. (“Animal… Statistics”) Concerns towards abusing animals have gone up in the past. Although there are not many cases on animal abuse, many have occurred. Abusers are charged with Criminal Animal Abuse and then sentenced to life in prison. Some animals that are physically abused are sometimes rescued by Animal Control, and are taken it to an animal shelter. However, many shelters have not had the space to keep the animals so the workers would have to put them down (Carol Roach). Researchers have shown that the main animals getting abused are dogs, chickens, horses, and livestock (“Animal...
Executive Summary Every 60 seconds, an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to act aganist animal testing because it is cruel and inhumane.
For animal welfare and the causes of animal abuse new research has been created. Since animal abuse is fairly a new subject, new research is constantly brought up. In the Bahamas a study was done in the College of Bahamas, and it states that, “…dogs were equally likely to be considered members of the household in homes without domestic violence,” (Fielding 197). Homes with violence show that humans substitute human victims for animal victims. Animal rights activists are trying to break down symbolic boundaries betw...
Animal abuse for pets can range from neglecting to take care of the animal to the actual deliberate abuse of the animal such as beating, shooting, stabbing, or lighting the animal on fire.
