There are a variety of different opinions and moral positions that divide people all around the world when it comes to the controversial subject of how the human race chooses to exploit animals. Animals deserve the same rights as humans, yet the treatment of animals in today’s society should result in farms, companies, and even whole industries being sued for the reprehensible treatment that is practiced daily. My question is, why do we protect and hold various animals in high esteem, but continuously deprive other animals of their basic gift of life? Why is it a common belief that some animals hold more right to live a free and happy life than others? There is an immense level of hypocritical wildlife ‘protection’ that governments provide to shield certain species from endangerment. It is widely recognised that the act of illegally farming species such as tigers, elephants, and rhinos is completely frowned upon, yet around 520 – 620 million animals are slaughtered every year by the meat industry, but governments are doing nothing to put a stop to this. (What Happens in Australian Slaughterhouses, 2015). Farming animals for the soul purpose of consuming their flesh as food is widely accepted around the world, yet laws have been put in place to prevent harm to wildlife animals and governing cruelty towards domestic animals on what is and isn’t an acceptable way of life that pets can be provided with. I do not disagree with these said regulations, but I must speculate as to why governments don’t cater for rights of animal species. Has society reached the point where a species can only be protected if it is endangered and pets are generally considered ‘cuter’ than other domestic animals, therefore they have more worth?When considering animal rights in any sense of the word, surely every animal, no matter the species, deserves a life of dignity. Do you know how any molecule of milk that you consume, actually gets to you? The dairy industry is more than willing to explain how the cows are reared, then harvested, then the milk stored, then transported, then tested, processed, packaged, and finally sold. (Australian Dairy Production, 2016) When in fact, vital information is left absent to the world. During the natural cycle of life, a mother will provide her offspring with the nutrients necessary to life through her milk that her body will only produce when it undergoes this maternal cycle.
