MY PERSONAL STATEMENT

It is a journey that I have gone through so many years up to now. I still remember the first time I learn mathematics or ‘ilmu hisab’ here in my birth place, Malaysia. It was my mother who begins to teach me mathematics by counting my cute little fingers. When I entered primary school, mathematics was very hard for me. It causes me a lot of pressure and I really do not like mathematics. However, everything changes as I continued my studies in secondary school. It was Mr. Tan who opens up my mind and interest to learn mathematics. Mathematics suddenly becomes something that so easy to be understood. In addition, I always completed my mathematics homework first and the only subject that I always score in all tests and examination is mathematics. Although I like mathematics but still my career during that time does not involve mathematics. I want to be a chef. Everything turns 180° when I entered university. Abhi is a stage 3 student from Year 6, who recently attempted his selective school test. Having a conversation with his parents helped me to know that Abhi enjoys doing maths and is working at appropriate stage level. Abhi states that his most interesting topics in maths are place value, angles and geometry (I-04), as they are easy to understand (I-05). Whereas, he hates fractions and decimals (I-06) as he found them to be very confusing (I-07).
As a daughter, I always have tremendous admiration toward my father. I respectfully consider him as my role model as well as my behavior guide. My father, who is a successful business man, surprisingly has great passion for math and solving its problems. That might explain why I take interest in Math when I was at a very young age. People usually describe me as a patient, passionate and hard-working person. Growing up in Vietnam and having a chance to study abroad in the United States have taught me many valuable lessons of life. As a freshman who just entered college, I can speak fluently both Vietnamese and English. I decided to attend University of Nebraska at Omaha not only because of my affection for this beautiful city, but also the belief that UNO is the best place for me to develop my career as well as to achieve the education that I wish. I love traveling and learning about different cultures around the world, which is the reason why I chose international business as my major.
Soaked under sweat, I stood on the running machine, took a deep breath, and counted in my mind, one…two… three, GO! With renewed power and confidence, I started to run again with satisfaction. This moment happened every day in last summer at a gym and I lost 62pounds. Had persisted for five months, I am so proud of myself that I am able to achieve the goal of losing weight and established high self-discipline. In addition, I have gained great appreciation for the challenges. However, I also have grown up from this, on the other hand, frustrated experience. Not because the process of losing weight was painful, but because my by-product of the weight loss journey, my online team.
Whoosh!A bed whizzed by, surrounded by about 6 medical personnel. “What’s going on?” I thought immediately with apprehension. I knew whatever was happening it was not ideal. Ensuring I was not in the way, I stood on my toes to see what demanded so much attention. To my astonishment, I saw a coin sized hot-pink little girl. She could not have been bigger than two quarters lying side by side.She was struggling! Even with all the procedures the doctors were executing to save her life, she was performing the most work.
Math is not a scary thing. It can be fun and highly useful. In researching adult learners who return to college, I found a quote by Einstein saying (2015), “Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics. I can assure you that mine are still greater.” In Einstein’s humility, it was heartening to know we all have our weaknesses. It was even more hopeful knowing his historical mathematical strengths. According to Erskine (2015), “While the overwhelming majority of Americans, 93 percent, agree that strong math skills are essential to being successful in life, nearly a third say they would rather clean the bathroom than solve a math problem.” We all know how socially acceptable and funny it is to be bad at math. Although Erskine stated it too, she is right. However, I feel the tide is turning. It is becoming increasingly acceptable to improve oneself. I am looking forward to using the EdReady program for my Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry skills. I also learned that mathematics was more than merely an intellectual activity: it was a necessary tool for getting a grip on all sorts of problems in science and engineering. Without mathematics there is no progress. However, mathematics could also show its nasty face during periods in which problems that seemed so simple at first sight refused to be solved for a long time. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
