LD206 Principles of supporting an individual to maintain personal hygiene. 1) Understand the importance of personal hygiene. 1.1) Explain why personal Hygiene is important. Personal hygiene is an important part of all our lives. It’s good for feeling good, comfortable and clean. Good personal hygiene means the reduction of body odour which can be unpleasant for the individual and others. This can also mean that the individual is socially excluded due to body odours. This also extends to regular cleaning of your teeth, which if not regularly done, will lead to bad breath, gum disease and eventually health problems with your teeth. Personal hygiene also makes you have feelings of self-worth and can make you feel valued. It is important for your health and wellbeing. We can maintain good personal hygiene by showering regular, washing hair, brushing teeth and using anti-perspiring deodorants. This all helps kill harmful bacteria’s that could lead to health risks and illnesses, prevents odour build up, that can lead to unpleasant smells and this may in turn impact on the individuals lives. Preferences and needs are important and will include any particular requirements around personal hygiene determined by an individual’s culture/faith/belief/religion. 1.2) Describe the effects of poor hygiene on health and wellbeing. There are many effects that can come from not maintaining good standards of hygiene. These include:  Hair can become greasy, skin can appear porous and dry, and bodily odours can start to arise. These are caused from a build-up of sweat from the glands within the skin which can lead to an increase in bacteria.  Bad breath is another effect of poor hygiene. It commonly develops from not regularly brushing your... ... middle of paper ... ...through each stage of the process, making sure they understand and are comfortable with what has been said and what will be happening.  Where ever possible, ensure your other colleagues know where you are in order for you and the individual are not disturbed, and lock the door if necessary.  When giving personal hygiene cover personal areas that are not being washed making sure the individual is not caused any embarrassment  Ensure throughout that you are listening and asking if everything is ok or if they are feeling uncomfortable.  One of the most important parts of personal hygiene is to encourage the individual, if they are able, to do parts of the cleaning themselves.
