LD206 Principles of supporting an individual to maintain personal hygiene. 1) Understand the importance of personal hygiene. 1.1) Explain why personal Hygiene is important. Personal hygiene is an important part of all our lives. It’s good for feeling good, comfortable and clean. Good personal hygiene means the reduction of body odour which can be unpleasant for the individual and others. This can also mean that the individual is socially excluded due to body odours. This also extends to regular cleaning of your teeth, which if not regularly done, will lead to bad breath, gum disease and eventually health problems with your teeth. There are many effects that can come from not maintaining good standards of hygiene. These include:  Hair can become greasy, skin can appear porous and dry, and bodily odours can start to arise. These are caused from a build-up of sweat from the glands within the skin which can lead to an increase in bacteria.  Bad breath is another effect of poor hygiene. It commonly develops from not regularly brushing your teeth which allows bacteria to form. Food gets stuck in teeth and can rot over-time, producing bad smells. This can get worse if not treated, leading to dental diseases such as gum disease and tooth decay.  You need to always keep your hands clean. Your hands touch many things during the day and they come into contact with bacterium. If you do not wash your hands, it gives the chance for the bacteria to spread. This increases the risk of an individual contracting a number of illnesses such as the common cold, influenza and other harmful illnesses.  Not maintaining own personal hygiene can make the individual’s skin break down, this can in turn cause sores which can lead to infections and pain for the …show more content…

2) Know how to encourage an individual to maintain personal hygiene. 2.1) Explain how to address personal hygiene issues with an individual in a sensitive manner without imposing own values. To give if the service user the choice they would like to have a wash/shower/bath and when they would to have one. Encourage them and be positive. Ask what products they would like to use and how they would like to wash, if they would prefer to wash themselves or if they would require some help. Explain how well they would feel after a wash and how it would make them feel better about themselves and perhaps more relaxed. You may suggest products they can use based on their own preferences. You should always use a person-centred approach. EG: An individual does not want to expose certain parts of the body (could be cultural or a personal preference and could be any part of the body not just 'private parts' - work with them to ensure that their preference is adhered to.
