When studying any culture it is inevitable that one is going to run into history of battles and wars. Most of these skirmishes mark important milestones in history, weather this is through the exchange of land and governess, or because of newfound power and transfer of power. Either way the ensuing wars that may follow uproar can trace all of history.
War causes many people to pay an increased amount of attention to the world around them, resulting in the documentation of the time through writing about the war. This is helpful in many ways. The most prominent of these being the abundance of sources that come out of war, regardless of their possible inaccuracy. One of the most prominent wars in ancient Greek history, the Peloponnesian war was fought over the span of almost three decades. Regarded as one of the most gruesome wars of all time, the Peloponnesian war continues to be a big part of war study. The best documentation of the Peloponnesian war that exists comes from Thucydides who wrote a very close personal account of the war with references to others first hand accounts.
The reliability of this source is questioned, even by Thucydides himself. He states, in reference to his use of speech quotation through out the book,
Some I heard myself, others I got from various quarters; it was in all cases difficult to carry them word for word in one’s memory, so my habit has been to make the speakers say what was in my opinion demanded of them… of course adhering as closely as possible to the general sense of what they really said.
This quote among others illustrated his insecurity towards his remembrance. Yet regardless of the accountability of the source, it remains one of the most important books in all ancient history. Single sources such as this one can implement whole new understandings of the world. Being able to compile a large number of opinions on a war make implementing a concrete understanding of the situation much more
