Parole Officer Category of Career: Law and Law Enforcement Description: Parole officers are the ones who are in charge of supervising criminals who are about to be released from prison/jail. They take notes on how the criminal is behaving, and transitioning from prison life to civilian life. A Parole officer can give an approval or denial for a criminal’s release. Personal Interest: I am interested in this career because I have an uncle who is currently working as a Parole Officer and tells me how much he enjoys his job, and that to me is important. I am also interested in this career because many people think all criminals never change, but they are wrong they just need good guidance. Although they do not diagnose disorders, they are a vital piece in child development because they are the people who help the children understand and surpass the limitations a certain disorder gives to them. Personal Interest: The main reason why I am interested in this career is that I work in a dentistry for kids and I see plenty of kids who may need help, but don’t receive it. I want to help kids who are affected by a disorder to succeed in life and not have many limitations. Knowledge & Skills: The skills required for this career are good observation skills, communication skills, and most importantly patience. Someone who is trying to be a child development specialist will benefit from knowing how the child develops from toddlers to teenagers. Career Preparation: A course that I believe is needed to make a person more eligible for this career is Human Growth and Development (EDPC 5317). I believe being able to understand how children grow up is vital because you can’t help a child if you do not have any sort of understanding regarding the changes they experience while growing.
