Old Major
Comrades of before the Rebellion, you know me. For the new animals
here I am Old Major. As you well know the Rebellion has caused a great
change to our farm. I must say you have done exceedingly well on the
upkeep of this farm. Isn't the rebellion about being free? Also, did
you not get rid of Jones so that we could all feel equal? Be treated
equal, share the work equally? Tell me who under these current
conditions is benefitting? I have spoken to a few of you and now know
how the initial plan went so very wrong. You listened to the pigs,
they seemed smart, and some of them would have had good ideas. One pig
Napoleon had an idea, and made promises to the rest, so they followed.
All but Snowball. Snowball was chased away by the vicious dogs
Napoleon raised and he himself took Snowballs plan to use in his own
beneficial way. Those pigs care only for themselves and because of
their intelligence, they have taken full advantage of you.
You now see that you are working for them. They are the ones
benefitting, they have all the apples and milk for themselves. They
don't do much work and they don't care about you animals as long as
they have the power. You will not now let these unfair conditions
continue will you? For you have done so much, and received so little
in return. I forward my idea of a new revolution. This new revolution
will be gone with all unequal facts. Food, working and living
conditions will all be fair and you shall not be ruled over by one
kind of animal. A committee of two of each animals on this farm will
represent and give forward your ideas to each other. Everyone is
invited to the meetings so you all know what is happening and you an
be involved in the planning for your future, as it is your future!
You have been pushed over though, by the pigs, just because they seem
white men, and now he is treated with no respect at all, he is an
Mayor Loeb, the racist mayor of Memphis, refused to acknowledge the union that would help black workers (Honey, p. 6). Memphis black workers were forced to live and work squalor conditions. Underpaid black workers were systematically forced into bad jobs with the lowest of wages because the sanitation job was below the white man (At the River I Stand). The sanitation job was reserved for blacks and only hired black people. Black sanitation workers were discriminately forced to work in the field of sanitation because it was one of the few jobs that were open to black workers (At the River I Stand). The city of Memphis management did not want a union to form because it would better the pay and conditions for black workers. Leaving one of society’s worst jobs to black workers is a racial issue and must be tackled as such. But, racial equality and economic equality go hand-in-hand, which is why the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike was both an economic issue and a racial
A high school student athlete; she gives up her social life and after school time for playing, practicing, and perfecting the sport she loves in hopes of making it to college, or an even higher level of competition. She has chased this dream for all of her life, going to camps, spending her free time sharpening her craft, becoming the athlete she visions; only to get put on the bench and replaced with someone who barely made the team and shows up to practice 2 times a week because the coach is required to give students the same amount of playing time. A player not working as hard as another does not deserve playing time benefits because the coach is required to give it to them. [High school coaches are in no way required to give equal playing time to players on the team because it is incorrect preparation for higher caliber sporting, it ruins the competitive nature within the sport, and it is an unfair advantage to players not working as hard as their teammates.]
...s already small portions of food and horrible tasks given to those who didn’t obey Jim Jones. Also, Reverend jones clearly didn’t mind the fact that he was forcing more than nine hundred people to commit suicide, a third if them children. Being me, I feel like the way Jim Jones treated these people, and the way he led this cult compound was completely wrong. I feel like Peoples Temple was a humungous mistake. I also feel truly sorry for those who lose friends and family in this horrible event and for those who went through this. Although this is all over the Jim jones Massacre will forever be remembered and never be forgotten.
but a fear of what rebellion may be still to come. This fear was what
Old Major pinpoints and labels humanity as the enemy, using them as a scapegoat for all the animals’ problems. In this particular instance, when he was addressing the animals’ problems during his speech “Is it not crystal clear, then, comrades, that all evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings?” From this instance, Old Major’s usage of ethos leads the animals into believing that their every misfortune and problem is caused by the greedy humans. He then uses the built up animosity from the animals towards humans which he uses to strengthen the resolve of the animals’ idea of rebellion. Furthermore, during his rant of the horrendous crimes humans have committed, Old Major stated that “no animal shall escape the cruel
they could never be equal. Blacks were never to be treated as equal or given respect because of the color of their skin. John explains ““Oh no, Nig,” he declared. “Nothing like that with me. I know you’re no nigger, so it’s all right. You can get as black as you please as far as I’m c...

In his speech to the other animals shortly before his passing, Old Major utilizes this technique, saying, “I do not think, comrades, that I shall be with you for many months longer, and before I die, I feel it my duty to pass on to you such wisdom as I have acquired”(6). Old Major is seen as a role model, and works as a sort of leader or elder on the farm, but he is dying, and seeks to make the other animals rise up against the humans because he feels that humans are evil. To do this, Old Major uses his status as an appeal to the animals’ ethos, endorsing the idea of human inferiority and wickedness to make the other animals want to have a revolution. Old Major reminds the animals of his age and of the wisdom he had obtained in his life before he describes his dream to make sure that the animals listen and act on his story and commands. This means that Old Major leverages his public image in order to make his ideas seem more credible to the other
To begin, Old Major is a very notable satire. Old Major himself portrays Vladimir Lenin, the man who planted the ideas to rebel against Nicholas Czar. Leninism, a political belief that imperialism is the highest form of capitalism which shifts struggles in all societies was made by Lenin. Similarly, Old Major planted the idea to rebel against Mr. Jones and formed the ideas for ANIMALISM, which in blunt terms states, “Four legs good, two legs bad,” (13). During his speech, Old Major states that the main reason by which rebellion is necessary is, “Man. Man
Whether dying old as an athlete or young, one has a greater affect than the other. As an athlete myself this topic relates to me quite well. Athletes in general, who do an outstanding job with their athletics, do things that are unexpected. Records are broken and championships were won. It has been twenty-one years since WHS has won a team state championship in swimming and diving. And in that twenty-one years we have finally done what is unimaginable and what was thought to be in 1993 the only championship that WHS would get. However, not only is swimming and diving a team sport it is also an individual sport. How we do in our individual events determines how we place as a team. This is also where people way before us, such as Guy Fulfer, has set state records and school records. Sadness begins in an athlete, but all begins in Housman’s “To an Athlete” and it does bring sadness to an athlete in three ways, disappointment, discouraged, and finally sadness.
Furthermore, the film is highly inclusive, giving the viewer thorough detail not only about the religious organization, but also Jones himself. To start off, the film gives detail of Jones’ upbringing, how he behaved as a child, and certain psychological traits that could potentially explain why the incident happened. For instance, it was stated within the film that Jones grew up in a very poor family. His father, James Jones was an alcoholic, leaving his mother to provide for the family alone. As a result of his dysfunctional home-life, Jones grew to be

Old Major: He is a powerful and persuasive character and can be directed as the leader of the pack. “It is not crystal clear, comrades, that all the evils of this life of ours spring from the tyranny of human beings?” This is where it all began with his solution to overpower man which would result in equality with all the animals showing his enthusiasm and impeccable mental, persuasive power.
