The digital world that we live in is all around us. We use smart phone alarms to wake us in the morning, we listen to digital radio on the way to work, we spend our day at work on digital tools such as iPads and computers, and we come home and watch shows on our digital television (Howell, 2014). My digital worlds overlap and intertwine. I spend my morning scrolling through my Facebook page, matching sure I catch up on all the news I have missed out on while I have been asleep. I spend my afternoon on the computer studying and emailing my friends and family. I use the computer to stay connected to people throughout the day on social media. Module 1 assignment was to write our current vision of the future of education and learning covering each of the STEEP areas. STEEP includes Social, Technological, Environmental, Economic and Political. In the assignment, technology was said to be an area that a lot of educators are turning to. However, the question has always come up, is this a good idea? At times, it feels like a disadvantage to students who cannot afford the technology. Also, technology can handicap students, but since there is no way to turn from it now, why not try to do it correctly?
One of these reason's is that I love helping people and the server out. When I can make someone happy, it's not only making them happy, but me as well. Helping just comes natural to me and I don't really know why. I've been like that as a kid too. I wouldn't say I'm a brainiac in school but I excel in my classes. But when someone needs tutoring or help, I'm always the first one to say "I will." And the same applies for Minecraft. Another reason why I decided to apply today is because, I love Faithful's community and server as a whole. MaverickYT introduced me to this great and supporting community. You know some HCF server's, people can be not as nice as they could be. And people on this server, think differently. I don't know what makes the people on here above any other server. My last and final reason is that, the community is starting to become toxic. It's not completely toxic, I'm just saying it's starting to get there. Even though there are some really nice and giving people on Faithful, there is always a bad part to all things. And I really want to fix this. Me being able to help out and try to bring positivity to the server, is what I've been trying to do forever. And me being a staff member can maybe get my word out there. However, today we have access to all of this and more. Technological advances have not only made changes in how we communicate, but also in how everyday tasks are done. The New York Times explains how social media affects children’s behavior and academics, and how the concept of dating has been altered while Louis C. Though being exposed to technologies like computers from an early age may have given us the ability to do things more efficiently, technology has also made us less dependent on ourselves. Claudia Wallis, editor for Time, in her article makes known in The Multitasking Generation, “That level of multiprocessing and interpersonal connectivity is now so commonplace that it’s easy to forget how quickly it came about. Fifteen years ago, most home computers weren’t even linked to the Internet” (63). There are many things that students are able to do on their computer that their parents aren't even aware of or that the parents couldn’t do themselves. My parents always tell of how looking through the library’s card catalog and searching for the books they needed only to find out that they have been taken out. Social networks, like Facebook or You Tube can keep someone updated with world events and even local events. It has become part of everyday life in which people can’t live without. But what lies beneath is the evil of how addictive technology can be. The above chart demonstrates that almost 60% of students use electronics more than two hours a day. This shows us that technology can be addictive. Jonathan Mandell’s article Are gadgets, and the Internet, actually addictive, recalls a time in April 2007 when BlackBerry users could not send or receive emails for 11 hours because of a glitch in the system. Many people reported this as a natural disaster (Mandell, 2007). People are relying on technology so much, that it is becoming a major problem in our society when it becomes temporary unavailable. Being able to plan your whole day on your smart phone and lock your front door to your house at the same time contributes to society laziness and dependency on technology. On the chart picture below I surveyed fellow ECPI Students on the question does technology make us lazy and or smatter and this was the results. From this pie chart it’s clearly shown that more than half of the students at ECPI agree that technology is making people lazy. The impact of technology on our individual lives and culture has been a general issue of our time. In her essay “In the Beginning Was the Word,” Christine Rosen analyzes the effects of the image-dominated modern society and its influence on our daily lives, as well our comprehension skills of complex literature acquired through the years of human history. In “Three Tweets for the Web” Tyler Cowan analyzes the effects of a new cultural medium of our society and its effectiveness on multitasking as well as increasing intellectual satisfaction of our highly literal modern society. Rosen and Cowan both present the evidence that our society is in a midst of a culture transition, and printed world is being a less central part of our lives. This cultural transition affects our daily activities in many ways; such as, stimulating distractions, duration of attention span and our efficiency at multitasking.
We invest more in talking online than talking face to face. Overuse of machines has numerous negative impacts, for example, creating physical/behavioral sicknesses, harming family connections and diminishing scholarly study. Above all else, when a computer turns into the essential issue of an individual's life, they experience a conversion in behavior; they feel that they cannot live without a computer. The normal thing to see with youngsters who have been permitted to invest an excess of time on the computer, optically watching TV, or playing video games and when it is to stop, they have temper tantrums.
