Anyone who works with, has, or has ever been around children knows how true the saying ‘children are like sponges’ is. Children are influenced by everything; parents, peers, teachers, and most importantly their home life. Influences from their environment can affect them positively and negatively, however if the child is affected negatively that does not mean the child cannot overcome that obstacle. Many people think how a child will turn out is based on their genes and biological make up or nature, however I believe that nurture is really what influences the way a child develops through-out their life. This documentary is about a child who grew up in a terrible home environment where she was neglected and sexually abused all before the age of one by her biological father. Then she and her younger brother were adopted by a minister and his wife, they took very good care of the children giving them a stimulating positive environment to grow up in, however the young girl was already too traumatized. The child would molest the younger brother, try to kill the younger brother by beating him, and would hide knives from the kitchen in her bed room to kill the parents in the middle of the night. This child suffered from Reactive attachment disorder, which means the child doesn’t know how to initiate or respond in appropriate ways socially and that they cannot make proper connections with other people. However after extensive therapy and supportive people and a positive environment around her the child grew up perfectly normal and is now a Registered nurse in a prenatal unit. I will use this case study example to show that the negative and bad early years had a negative effect on the girl’s childhood but when she was put into a good environment she was able to over some her past and the issues that came from it to go on to live a good …show more content…

I can pull this information from my class notes, textbooks, and quotes from my professors during lectures. This will be helpful because it will all be coming from sources who know what they are talking about and have a lot of knowledge on the topics. Some topics I would like to bring up would be Piaget, Brain Plasticity, Vygotsky, and Social Learning Theory. All these theories talk about and have proven in some way that the environment the child is in greatly influences the child’s development. Of course there are people who believe that nature is the way to determine how a child will turn out. They believe the genes the individual has is a precursor to how their life style will be. They believe that if your parents violent you are most likely to be violent. If you possess a certain gene sequence you are more likely to be aggressive. There are plenty of theories who support this notion of nature over nurture. However there are just as many examples out there to show how they are wrong that I will bring
