Development is the process of growing, forming or creating into something slightly more advanced than before. Development starts during conception and ends during death. Development consists of three developmental domains which are, physical development, cognitive development, and psychosocial development. Each of which involve some form of growing or changing including the changes of moods throughout the lifespan. The Nature versus Nurture concept are issues that are found in stages of development as well. Essay 1 – Narrative Childhood is a time when significant events can and will leave impressions on oneself. It is not out of the ordinary that a large event will at least somewhat shape the mind of a child whether they realize it or not. One event that may have altered me somewhat was when I had to move from my old abode of Baileyton, Tennessee to Morristown to live with my grandparents. This was the result of my mother’s eventual passing after a losing battle with Cancer. Experiencing the “real world” so early may have changed how I think about and come to certain conclusions.

To start examining these long-term affects, this article suggests that a committee be brought together with professionals of many different areas who work with the child and have observed their growth. Research should span across the child’s physical, mental, and behavioral health areas. Having professionals from many different disciplines allows for a wider expanse of knowledge of the development of a particular child. That child’s Pediatrician will be able to give information on the child’s physical health. The school-teacher would be able to provide information on the child’s social development. A psychologist would be able to provide information on the mental status of an abused child...

Although individual children develop at their own pace, all children progress through an identifiable sequence of physical, cognitive, and emotional growth and change. A child who is ready for school has a combination of positive characteristics: he or she is socially and emotionally healthy, confident and friendly; has good peer relationships; tackles challenging tasks and persists with them; has good language skills and communicates well; and listens to instructions and is attentive (World Bank 1). The interactive influences of genes and experience literally shape the architecture of the developing brain and the most important ingredient is the nature of a child’s engagement in the relationship with his or her parents (Bales 1). The parenting style of a mother or father has a strong and direct impact on the sequence of development through which the child progresses on the way to becoming a physically, mentally and emotionally healthy individual.

Both Erik Erikson’s (1963) theory and Mary Ainsworth and John Bowlby (1973) theory support the idea that early life experiences impact the person across their lifespan. Both theories believe that personality begins to develop from a young age and therefore occurrences in early life can have lasting impacts on the developmental of an individual. An individual’s social and psychological development is significantly influenced by early life and childhood experiences. The experiences an individual has as a child impacts on the development of social skills, social behaviours, morals and values of an individual.

As parents we want our children to experience the joys of childhood. One’s child rearing choices are the most dominate factors in adolescents. Parents must control the outside influences interfering with their emotional and physical maturity.

Children growing up in the United States come from different homes yet, all experience and understand the meaning of family. Some children grow up with in single parent family, or with a mother and father. Family is a big part of their lives and beliefs. Researchers bring forth evidences, that being brought up by one parent can physically and mentally destroy a child’s future. Growing up in any type of family can affect a child’s life emotionally, physically, and socially. Children can still be successful in life regardless of being raise by either a single or joint family. Success is not determine by who raise a child, but determine by what the child wants to become in life. Do researchers have a valid point with who raises a child can determine their success in life? Even though the odds are against children from single parent homes being successful children still can succeed. In Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” she tells a story of a single mom who raises two daughters and the mother has to play a role of both mother and father. In the story “Mama” is describe as a strong loving mother to daughters Dee and Maggie. She rejects a traditional gender role when she works to raise and provide for her daughters; instead she takes on an alternative masculine role. “Mama” is proud of her hardy nature and ability to butcher hogs and milk cows. Maggie is the youngest in the story describe as a nervous disturb young lady, and is severely burned in a house fire as a child.
