Dear Reviewer,

I have looked over the comments that were on my Op-Ed draft and addressed the main issues that I had. The first problem I faced was writing my Op-Ed without a clear point of view. I addressed this issue by finding out what my opinion was and making all my points address it. My point of view is that the United States needs to focus on helping children who suffer poverty related illnesses through the school system. Because I changed my point of view, I decided to change my title from “Poverty, a Cause of Diseases in Children” to “Schools: The Solution to Diseases of Poverty in Children.”

I believe the best approach is to focus on the children who are now suffering with the diseases that poverty caused to reduce its effect on their future. Thus, poverty will not have to follow them throughout their life and cause them more disabilities. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, in the U.S. alone, a roaring 22% of children are living in poverty. Reducing the rate of child poverty is important as hunger is not the only issue that these children suffer from. Obesity, neurological problems, and stress-related illnesses are the three main poverty-caused issues that need to be reduced through changing the school system. These issues can continue to impede on a child’s life and worsen as they grow older. A Medical Daily article states that the high rates of obesity in children who suffer from poverty are due to their diet and exercise. The price of nutritious foods is not affordable to these families, so they opt for cheap, high-calorie foods which lead to their child’s weight gain.
