Overcoming Language Barriers: My Personal Journey

Many people may think that since you are young you have the ability to adapt to a new language faster than an adult but that wasn't my case. When I was two and a half years old I was adopted from China and I didn't know any English. However, over time I picked up more and more of the new language to me at that time. After elementary school started they noticed that I was struggling with reading, so they did some tests with me and had meetings with my parents. Overall, they believed what could be the reason why I had difficulty reading was the transition from Chinese to English wasn't the easiest flow for me. Even though I had to battle against reading, I did lots of practice at home and in school at the program Title; all the effort I put into this has lead me to overcoming this issue and has helped prepare me for my future.
While my years in elementary school, I had lots of practice like going to Title to improve my reading. I had opportunities to have summer sessions and I did them. They were usually with a couple other students, but one summer I got to do it with my second-grade teacher by myself. However, the down side of doing Title was …show more content…

There is no way you can escape it because it is within every little thing in your life. What if I didn't have my family and my school system to support me every day to achieve mine and their goal for me? What if I didn't have the power in me to say I need to do this because I wouldn't be successful later in life? Now I have a bigger future to look at since my reading skills have improved.
Since I worked hard over my elementary years into middle school years, I was able to be in a regular reading and language arts class in the years afterwards. If I didn't have the opportunities to work hard and have lots of practice, I wouldn't be as successful as I am now. I am lucky that I had opportunities and support when I was younger. I appreciate the time you have given to reading my narrative
