DiMaggio helped the team by hitting two homeruns, which lead the team to victory. DiMaggio was awarded for his achievements with the payment of two gold baseballs and two orders for baseball merchandise which were worth eight dollars apiece (“The Man”). DiMaggio’s next big step in his baseball career was going to play in the minor league. While DiMaggio was in the minor league he played for the San Francisco Seals. His biggest achievement during this season was that he hit safely in sixty-one games in a row which was a big accomplishment for DiMaggio (Kindred 26).
The Cy Young award is given annually to the League’s best pitcher. In 2003 he won the 300th game of his career. He is only one of four MLB pitchers in all time to pass the 4,000 strikeout mark. Roger Clemens started his dominance of baseball in 1981 at San Jacinto junior college. That year he compiled a 9-2 record and was drafted by the New York Mets.
Now Major League baseball accepts any race or ethnicity. If Jackie Robertson would have never been signed by the Dodgers what would have happened? Half the hall of fame would be gone. This one man actually helped segregation not only in baseball but the United States as a whole (Baseball). With more people able to play and come to the ballpark fan growth skyrocketed.
In 2009, Choo made contract with Indians for only one year, and during the one-year contract, he broke his records and joined 20-20 club (20 home runs and 20 stolen bases). Alex Rodriguez signed a seven-year contract for two hundred and fifty-six million dollars in 2000. This not only made him the richest baseball player ever, but also the richest Latin American athlete in history. The signing of Alex Rodriguez proved that Latin American athletes deserved to sign big money contracts just like the other players. Teams are taking are taking advantage of the abundance of talent in Latin America. All major League teams are active in the Dominican Republic.
Which also might be why the Yankees are the richest team in the game. Teams can sign star players and still earn money from it. For example, right after the Texas Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez to a long term deal, ticket sales started to go up. “The organization sold 400 season ticket packages. By comparison, it had sold only 74 ticket packages by January of the previous year” (Deschiver).
The average age for a Red Sox team member was 31.1 years, the oldest team average in the league. Additionally, the cumulative payroll for the 2004 Red Sox was the second highest in Major League Baseball at $125,208,542 or $4,173,618 per player. The previous two statistics describe some of the off-field demographic makeup of the 2004 Red Sox. In additional to being a veteran and well-paid ball club, the Red Sox performed well on the field as well. The team batting average (number of hits divided by number of official at-bats) of the Red Sox was tied for the highest of the 30 Major Leagues teams at 0.282.
Chapter Summary One of my favorite chapters in this book was chapter fourteen. The name of the chapter is “The Leader.” “The Leader” is about how Mickey Mantle became the New York Yankee’s best player and how he took Joe DiMaggio's place on the team. Chapter fourteen is about Mickey Mantle’s tenth season. During that season Mickey Mantle batted .317 and won the Triple Crown Award for the second time in a row. Only a few other players have done that in baseball history.
Ended with a lifetime batting average of .342 Is the all-time leader in home run percentages (1/8.5 AB), walks (2056), and slugging (.690). Is 2nd all-time in home runs (714), runs, and RBIs Quote from The Babe "The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime." - Babe Ruth Did You Know? Babe Ruth is credited with the invention of the modern baseball bat.
Baseball is more of a business than just a game and many things have made it this way. A lot of reasons have contributed to the rising salaries there is today and it will not stop there. The amount of baseball contracts will keep rising each year. One of the most notable people to receive an unbelievable contract was Alex Rodriguez. He singed the biggest contract in baseball history with Texas Rangers for an estimated 252 million dollars over ten years.
