I do agree that mental disorders and illnesses are behaviors that are not socially acceptable but I do not think that is all it is. When we think of something that is not socially acceptable, we simply may think of a difference in culture or a behavior that is simply not accepted as common practice and does no harm to the person doing the act or the other people involved. Mental illness is not simply an action that is not socially acceptable but is something that requires attention and care. It is important to also consider that saying mental illness is something that simply is not socially acceptable fails to imply that many people suffering from mental illness can be helped and require the need of therapists and psychiatrists. My grandmother struggled with mental illness in her later years and was treated discriminately, even by the staff that was to care for her in the nursing home. The answer to “dealing” with my grandmother was to drug her so much she couldn’t talk or tie her to her bed and leave her in the room to scream. I find that many people who have mental illness are shut out and the people around them do what they have to pretend it doesn’t exist and ignore it so they can go on with their lives. I think people with mental illness are seen as burdens or dangerous and are blocked out from society whether that be relationships, jobs or other simple forms of life and socialization. Discrimination against people with mental illness will even happen in the person’s own family and people who say they love them will give up on them and consider them a waste of time because their own lives are falling apart trying to cope with the family member. Some family members fail to get their loved one treatment for fear of how a mental facility will treat their loved one or will simply tell the person they need to stop acting the way they are and “toughen” because the family member does not understand mental
