1.1 Introduction
In today’s world, there are many reasons which have led to people getting a paid job. Amongst the various articles, many authors argued that money remains the main motivator underlying the reason why people work, since people need money to meet their basic needs and to ensure survival. According to Ramlall (2004) motivation can be defined as “the willingness to exert high levels of effort towards organizational goals, conditioned by the effort’s ability to satisfy some individual need.”

Therefore, the local Government has invested a huge amount in Mauritius re-branding, through the ‘Mauritius c’est un Plaisir ‘concept, in a view to increase the number of tourists visiting our island. According to the prior Minister of Tourism, Mr Xavier Duval, Mauritius is expecting about 2 million of tourists by 2015. As a result, each study has their own conclusion regarding the subject. It has been noted that the level of absenteeism and the level of staff turnover is high as employees are not motivated in their workplace. Many Mauritians have opted to work abroad in hotels or on ship cruises. The purpose behind this choice is because abroad, they will receive better wages than in Mauritius. Hence, instead that these Mauritian people go abroad to find a job with a better salary, management should find ways and means to encourage them to stay in their own
