Li Cunxin’s first and only novel, Mao’s Last Dancer, is a stunning and emotional autobiography filled with the hard work and perseverance of Li, himself. This inspiring story tells the tale of himself, whom is given the chance to be one of chairman Mao’s private ballet dancers. Li was born in a poor family but is raised in one of pride and respect. However, one day, a few government officials make a brief visit to his school looking for future ballet stars. When Li is ignored, His teacher bravely steps up and volunteers Li. The officials consider the decision and accept him leading him on the his difficult, but worthwhile life. In Li Cunxin’s autobiography, I realized the astounding effect of dedication and determination. As my mother and father were to me, Teacher Xiao was to him. Teacher Xiao was one of Li’s favorite teachers and according to the text, “He had been my mentor, my only mentor, the only teacher in whom I could confide. He was like a parent to me.” Teacher Xiao noticed something different about Li and the talent that he had. Thus, Teacher Chan started teaching Li separately. He was the one who taught Li to love ballet; he was the one who always encouraged Li when Li struggled. He treated Li nearly as well my mother and father treated me.
