Football is a sport that is enjoyed by many people, but when a high school football team ends the year with a record of more losses than wins people start asking the million dollar question, why? A losing season is one of the worst experiences for the players, coach, and the fans. While some individuals may single out that players are the major cause of a losing football season, there are several reasons behind the failure of a team ranging from the coach to the attitudes of the players which in turn effects the fans and the team as a whole.

Football is one of the games that is played by numerous participants. The ball has to be moved from one end of the field to the other by the offensive team resulting in a higher score than the other team to win. However, in some cases, particular players attempt to score individually. On this subject, some players do not embrace a teamwork attitude. When a team works together and scores a win, every player on the team is a star; not one individual. If the team cannot work together and become a unit, they will find themselves fighting amongst each other. One of such effects is lack of morale and confidence to both players and fans. Particularly, consecutive losses drive away the confidence of players. When a player loses confidence, the likelihood of giving up more games is very high. This also makes them lose morale; consequently, they will play just because it is their role. When the team continually loses, fans get discouraged and stop coming to the games. Lack of fan support not only hurts a team financially, it negatively effects team morale. The result of a losing season can affect a player for the rest of their life. A player that is very skilled and works hard every practice may have the chance to be recruited by college scouts possibly resulting in a paid college education. Sadly, college scouts do not want to recruit a player from a team with a losing season. A player can lead the team in touchdowns, tackles, or put in extra time in the weight room, but none of the stats matter when the scouts see the overall record of the team. Every player on a high school football team has the dream of an undefeated season and ultimately ending with a state championship ring.
